Is this game using 4th Edition L5R? And is this a home crafted game or a published set?
I am currently having listened to episode one.
I am 3 years through a 1st Edition L5R campaign which actually begun just like this with the players performing their Gempuku and entering (and thus winning) the Topaz Championship.

We do use 4th edition rules, and it starts out using the Topaz Championship which was in the 1st edition book but it was updated to 4th edition(can be found online easily enough), but it then goes into a completely homebrew campaign. The Topaz Championship scenario has been around for 15 years and is used QUITE often as an intro scenario.
Hope you keep listening and I hope you enjoy it!

Am enjoying this immensely. After years of nothing but Dungeons and Dragons it is nice to see Oriental themed RPGs coming to the fore. If I can enquire what are your views of Legend of the Five Rings as a Roleplaying game. I've always found it was very good for true roleplaying by the players even without them realising Three years, and only two campaign arcs of my story I now have zero of the original Gempuku characters in play. (My TC got killed my mooks only a month or so, deep within Shiro Mori after the championship ) I enjoy hearing when you have your 'props' As I am reference as GM-sama no-Oni welcome my players in to the game room, and run dress in my Yukata with hadori (jacket) and boken. Times with a meal/tavern or with the Crab often include Sake and/or Green tea. Were any gaming involves Tsuro (as it looks suitably rokugani), or for reference only I have a game board setup with 'Go'

I've always found it was very good for true roleplaying by the players even without them realising I'm finding it a refreshing change from my typical games (which are typically in modern settings) and I love the fact that it very much flies in the face of the expectations of D&D esque games. I would say though that the game really benefits from having players that understand the expectations of Rokugan. Sir Guido spent a lot of time teaching us the world and what was expected of samurai and each of us understood the positions of our respective clans. I know personally that reading through the setting material in the rulebook was a big benefit and helped me shape the way Doji Okimoto developed over the course of the game as he felt the pressure of his Crane heritage clash with his Lion training.

The Gempuku / Topaz Championship does make for a superb first adventure. Perfect to introduce players, the world, and most importantly the rokugani/player mindset. I'm so glad to see/hear players keep with this published adventure.
My Topaz Champion was a Lion Ikoma, may the ancestors project his soul, who died by maho/snake clan mooks. He has been replaced by a Dragon/Ronin who joined the party (took the place of an NPC bandit group member beat up previously) while helping the Fox Daimyo son within the southern forests.

I have always loved Rokugan. Since my first foray into the world in 1996(first with the ccg then the rpg), I have fallen in love with the rich history. My first draw to it was its asian nature as I have always like the idea of feudal japanese culture. What really kept me though was the factioning. I love the clans. Each one is different and offers different things to prospective players. It leads players to loyalty without anyone really even trying to make it into that.

Firstly there are too many points where the majority of the players are sat around doing nothing because one PC is in an extended contest such as fighting, athletics etc. Secondly the events occurring in the background and that I got the impression were meant to form the actual adventure rely far too heavily on the assumption that players will investigate even when the characters shouldn't. None of the adults are actively concerned about what is going on so why should the PCs be?

None of the adults are actively concerned about what is going on so why should the PCs be? Because they're the protagonists. It's really that simple. Protagonists do things that "normal" people wouldn't do. Scooby Doo would never have happened if they had been "normal". They aren't normal, so they go and investigate the Haunted Amusement Park when they have absolutely no good reason to do so. While the GM has the responsibility to not remove player agency and railroad the players, the players also have a responsibility to do something proactive. If they refuse to take a bite out of any of the hooks the GM dangles, than it's their own fault if they get a boring story.
