Hi i have been a GM for a little over a year, my last GM left us and only wanted to play second edition and me and my players want to move up into the new editions. Would it be better to start in 3, 3.5, or 4? i am currently running my own campaign which took me 6 months to set up and if i have to move everything to a new edition will this suck lol or should i finish it in second edition.

My advice would be to finish in the same edition and then look at others. 2, 3.x, and 4 are all D&D, but they're just not the same games.

I was a big fan of 3rd Edition, and ended up skipping 3.5. It did not look like a big leap and I was still pissed about spending money on the 3rd books to just have a new edition come up. When I got back into playing a D&D based game, I chose Pathfinder. Unlike 3rd and 3.5, new stuff is coming out for Pathfinder all the time. Sourcebooks, cool adventure paths(that are actually fun), and lots and lots of fluff material.
If you are unaware, the same basic backbone of gameplay is found in 3.0, 3.5 and Pathfinder. Its essentially the same game with some tweaks here and there. When it comes to 4th Edition, you are looking at a much more combat oriented, tactical miniatures game. Which is great if you and your players want that sort of thing.
The interesting thing about all those games you post: none of them are getting new things. Both 3.0 and 3.5 have gone the way of fan support, and 4th is getting ready to be kicked to the curb since 5th is coming along. Ok, I am stretching it a little on 4th, a lot of the neat stuff for Pathfinder has a 4th Ed version too(non-Paizo adventure paths for example) For the "Dungeons and Dragons" experience I got from 2nd Ed, yet streamlined for mechanics and characters made a little more intersting, I choose Pathfinder. It is basically 3.75. There's hardly any reason for non-druid players to want 3.X any longer, Pathfinder is where that family of games is now at.

If you are set on d&d then hold on and get 5th edition.
Like others have said - Pathfinder is also a good option and is basically d&d 3.75.

I'd go with D&D 3.5, or Pathfinder. The 3.5 PHB just got rereleased (even in print i think) and if you don't mind pdfs, i think it's all out there. Pathfinder is D&D 3.75 basically, wich doesn't make it better, just different. ( Even more "high magic" imo. ) But there's tons of stuff being released for it. BUT should you have a chance check out Castles & Crusades. It has an OD&D vibe with an, imo, neat modern streamlined system. And the Castle Keepers Guide has lots of options to tweak the system ( different magic systems, skill systems ect. ).

I would suggest starting in what you know, being 2nd ed, and then start expanding out to other editions, Pathfinder would be my first suggestion, but there are a lot of other options as well.
Dungeon World is a very different animal mechanically but definitely has the classic D&D feel to it.
Savage Worlds is very different on all counts but is a ton of fun and very energetic.
GURPS and Hero are loads of fun but both can be daunting out of the box.
FATE Core is also great fun but the basic economy of the game is so different that it often throws people for a loop the first few times they play it. (Note: my Jackercon Nov game is going to be Eclipse Phase in FATE for anyone who's interested.)
Just a few quick thoughts,
JiB

Castles & Crusades - new edition sensibilities with old edition feel/tropes. Sort of like 1e/2e with 3.5/Pathfinder streamlined mechanics . . . Aaron

Nothing firm, but lots of folks are guessing a final version for GenCon (Early August) 2014.
In the meantime, try Pathfinder (or at least browse the SRD enough to see if it's something you'd like to try). You can run a campaign with all the available books without dropping a dime as long as you have internet access at the table.

I think if you are staying with the D&D / Pathfinder conversation, I would say Pathfinder. The community is awesome and very helpful. I asked a few questions on the Paizo forum when I started and received answers within the hour. The answers were not shit, munchkin(y) or condescending. That was a bonus.
If you want to try another system..... GURPS.

Way late to the party here, but I'm curious about something @pyscoteddie. Why do you want to change editions? Is it because your group doesn't like the current edition you're playing? Or is it just to try something new?

If you have the patience, wait until 5th edition comes out (some time next year). If you do not have the patience, convince them to play pathfinder - RIGHT NOW
