Hello all, I have been playing D&D and GURPS for some time now and have finally decided to take the plunge in to GMing. I have an idea for a campaign that you may be able to help with. Zombies? Has anyone ever ran a campaign where all the pc's are zombies?
Here is a little background. I am part of two gaming groups one that plays only D&D 3.5, and one that is just learning GURPS 3.5. 3 of my 4 players are still new at tabletop RPGs and the fourth (my husband) has been doing this for 20 years.
I thought it would be fun to have them play as zombies. The idea of the story would be they are all WWII military who were killed and they wake up to realize they are all now zombies. With a sand box style quest they can decided whether they want to find a cure, kill all humans, find a refuge zombie camp or simply off themselves (preferably not). How would that effect the characters? Any thoughts good or bad? I am thinking about running this in GURPS simply because that is the system we are currently teaching the newbies. I am not against running this in a different system but i want to give them a chance to learn this one before I throw a new system at them.
Thanks for the time, Ricki Geek Girl from Colorado.

Regardless of what game you'll end up using for this, there's a fun and neat little game from Precis Intermedia titled Hunger: Zombies Must Feed you might want to look into.

I'm assuming the players will all be fully sentient right? Are they the only ones? Will they still use weapons etc? I've thought of one thing to watch out for - GURPS does zombies really well.... but as a fully self-aware PC (especially a soldier) they might end up playing like unkillable supermutants.... Although if WWII is in full swing then they are likely to encounter lots of soldiers and military artillery, vehicles etc. Which will help a lot in making a zombie's life dangerous It sounds awesome.

Hunger: Zombies Must Feed provides the zombie characters with a reason to eat humans while striving to retain/regain their humanity. It does so without getting pretentious, serious, philosophical, allowing for fun zombie gaming. Hence my recommendation of the game. It's actually a gaming supplement but if you're going to use GURPS you don't really need the core rules (GenreDiversion i) with it.

Jojo: I have purchased the supplement, it is a huge help.
Another thought on the campaign, I first imagine this as some what comical. I mean how fun would it be to be fighting some one when your finger falls off, or try to fight the urge to eat your mother!
Keep the good ideas coming!
Thanks for the advise.

My personal take on this would be to make it somewhat comical; overly serious zombie stuff has already been attempted once too often, IMHO YMMV.

All Flesh Must Be Eaten is a good game for PC Zombies. Additionally, the mechanics are pretty simple; and easy to convert to a d20 Modern game if your players bulk at a d10 system.

All Flesh Must Be Eaten is pretty much Teh Zombie Game when it comes to versatility and offers a solid, fairly rules-medium, gritty system. The revised edition of the core book has d20 conversion notes in the back.

With respect to the whole - regaining ones humanity whilst being a flesh eating abomination - sounds like Workd of Darkness Aaron

With respect to the whole - regaining ones humanity whilst being a flesh eating abomination - sounds like Workd of Darkness Aaron With regard to Hunger: Zombies Must Feed there's a notable difference. First, no philosophical/ethical pretentiousness or whiny emo-ness. Second, the urge to remember one's human life (it's more remembering or recalling the human condition than regaining humanity) serves as an incentive for acting like a zombie, i.e. eat people, and even improves your zombie character mechanically, whereas humanity in WoD - Vampire actually discouraged vampiric behaviour, and acting against it - which became unavoidable sooner or later - eventually made you more monstrous.

The char gen session for this in GURPS would be a hoot.
My only concern would be a motivation for the PCs, though much of this would be answered if you figure out the great philosophical questions of zombiehood.

GURPS Zombies was recently released.... Seems to give the full treatment from Romero to 28 Days Later to Sean of the Dead. I would guess both fluff and mechanics would be useful for the GURPS campaign if that's where you're headed still.

There's a funny movie called "Aaah! Zombies!" that I suggest watching to help generate ideas for this kind of game. It's a horrible B-Movie, that looks like it was filmed with 90's equipment used to record low-budget TV shows like Xena: Warrior Princess, but I liked it. Put a humorous spin on the zombie scenario.
