Just finished listening. Great show! I will now focus on a single insignificant tangent that came up because I am a rabid Doctor Who fan. I should probably mention that I fully understand that thinking people would watch the entirety of classic Doctor Who before looking at the new series is utterly insane. And yet, there's always that little voice in my head. The one that, when I see someone getting into the new show without having seen the old one, has that same reaction that a lot of die-hard Star Wars fans have when they hear someone say they want to start with Episode I. Thing is, the old and new series are different enough in style, tone, themes, and assumptions that a person who likes one isn't guaranteed to like the other. A comment which may also apply to Star Wars, come to think of it. This is illustrated when some of my peers who got super into the new series didn't know that the Time War was post original series. They were under the impression that The Doctor was the last of his people from the first episode.

I think it does also apply to Star Wars. I've heard folks praise Episodes 1 through 3 and yawn at 4 through 6 - and mostly it's been people who weren't alive when 4 through 6 came out. Despite understanding the logic of the situation, though, that emotional "WHAAAAA?" reaction still seems to happen sometimes. Perhaps it's something to do with age.

I agree. Hell, the original series differs from ITSELF that much depending on what decade you're in. Which is one reason why, when the new series first came out, I was about ready to smack the next person who told me with starry eyes, "The series grew up along with its audience!" ...Speaking of hype aversion.Cheer up, I'm sure we're due for a whole new fan schism once episode 7 arrives! Thanks for the "Wife in Space" blog rec, by the way! I wasted an hour or so reading their Blake's 7 reactions yesterday. Good times... This is illustrated when some of my peers who got super into the new series didn't know that the Time War was post original series. They were under the impression that The Doctor was the last of his people from the first episode. *Growl* stupid Time War. The Gallifrey episodes were always among my favorites. *sulks*

Basically Rose was the Doctors 'quick fling' while he had his middle age crisis . . . and like so many such flings, once the dust has settled and the crisis was over, he shipped her off to somewhere out of the way (an alternate reality) with a consolation prize/pay off (a broken Doctor). (By the way, if anyone wants to try climbing the Mount Kilimanjaro that is the original Doctor Who series, I heartily recommend reading this blog along with it: wifeinspace.com/ It makes the journey much more bearable and helps one take off the fan glasses and look at the shows in a somewhat more even-handed light. Like any long-running show, it has good episodes and bad episodes.) Incidentally, I love The War Games, but for the sake of all that is unholy, NEVER try to watch it all at once. The last time I watched it was in half-hour chunks over a couple of weeks. Much easier that way. They were also right to stop before the 6th Doctor came on. The actor (Colin Baker) might have turned out okay if he'd had good scripts... and good directors... and a good producer... so basically, ANYTHING good to help out, but unfortunately he didn't and that kind of began the downward spiral that led to the original show's demise (though it DID get a lot better by the end of the 7th Doctor's era, but sadly it was too late). Actually, I'm kind of worried that's happening again with the new series, but best not to open that particular can of worms... especially as it may involve spoilers. Yes, Classic Doctor Who! So I have to know, JimThatJim, who's your favorite OG Doctor?

My knee-jerk reaction is to say Tom Baker, as he was my first, and you never forget your first. I did harbor a strange liking for Sylvester McCoy, though.

I have never watched Dr.Who except for a single episode, it was a newer Doctor and they were on a space station with a lady who was just a face I think? I'm not sure. Didn't get into it and haven't watched it since, but my sister started cuttin through it on netflix recently.
