]Yes, Classic Doctor Who! So I have to know, JimThatJim, who's your favorite OG Doctor? My favorite Doctor has always been Tom Baker - he basically became the template folks thought of when looking at the series or thinking about new Doctors. I will say, though, that in my mind Jon Pertwee and Christopher Eccleston are locked in an eternal struggle for second place.

My wife is so set on Eccleston she eschewed further Doctor Who for switching out on her... though she's showing some interest in Capaldi.

Ecclestone was the main man in new Who. Tennant got a lot of excitement when he was on, but I knew Ecclestone would one day regain his deserved reputation. In old Who. It's Baker (of course) for me.

Tom Baker, as he was the Doctor during my formative years. Patrick Troughton, for being awesome. I quite liked Sylvester McCoy's Doctor; his darker, manipulative Doctor was interesting.
Chris Ecclestone was fantastic. ;D Matt Smith was suitably eccentric. David Tennant's Doctor was better with Donna, I think. The whole Rose thing was very overwrought. Peter Capaldi has got off to a cracking start, and I'm thoroughly looking forward to 2015.

My apologies for the hijacking of the thread. I keep forgetting mentioning Doctor Who on the internet is like opening Pandora's Box these days. There's a part of my brain that just can't seem to process how popular it's become. That said... I also very much like McCoy (I got to meet him once and we briefly traded some silly banter- it was awesome). I like Troughton a lot more now that I've had a chance to see the recons of the missing episodes and realized his Doctor was a lot more competent than I'd thought. I like Matt Smith quite a bit. I like Capaldi, but I'm kind of concerned they're going to Colin Baker him scriptwise. They really need to nail down his character and show more consistent redeeming qualities. Making him misanthropic can work (and work WELL if they do it right) but they need to make more of an effort with his characterization.

I guess the things that are attracting me to Capaldi's Doctor are the same things that attracted me to Hugh Laurie's House. It doesn't necessarily make him a good Doctor, but every once in a while it's fun to see an asshole in action. I can see it wearing thin before long - I'm hoping the revelations between the Doctor and Clara in the season finale and the Christmas episode will build him into a better character.

Yeah, I really like the "Doctor House as Doctor Who" idea, but they need to implement it a bit more consistently if they want it to work. I thought it carried through pretty well on a few of this season's episodes, but for me the rest kind of wandered off into "what am I even doing here?" territory when it came to basic motivational/protagonist stuff. I think Capaldi definitely has the chops to pull it off, but they've got to give him more to work with. That said, I did like the Christmas special (for the most part) so hopefully that'll be an indicator of it getting better. (Keeping my fingers crossed on that one...)

Worst episode last season? The Robin Hood episode - WTF and it written by Mark Gatiss and I've always looked forward to his stories. Aaron

My knee-jerk reaction is to say Tom Baker, as he was my first, and you never forget your first. I did harbor a strange liking for Sylvester McCoy, though. Nothing strange about that imo. There was Ace! :) My favorite Doctor has always been Tom Baker - he basically became the template folks thought of when looking at the series or thinking about new Doctors. I will say, though, that in my mind Jon Pertwee and Christopher Eccleston are locked in an eternal struggle for second place. :) I totally get that. I only discovered Doctor Who about 10 years ago via dvd. Started with Hartnell and "An Unearthly Child" and religiously watched everything I could get my hands on (in chronological order, of course) before watching the new series, but most folks I know started with either Baker via PBS or the new series. oWho: Pertwee, Baker then Troughton. NuWho: Ecclestone, Capaldi, then Smith :) Aaron oWho: Troughton <3 <3 <3, Davison, Baker/McCoy (but I kind of love them all) nWho: Eccleston, Tennant

Started with Hartnell and "An Unearthly Child" and religiously watched everything I could get my hands on (in chronological order, of course) before watching the new series, but most folks I know started with either Baker via PBS or the new series. That is awesome. Very brave of you to dive in like that. I'd known about Doctor Who from about the age of four because my uncle (who'd been living in England for a while) used to watch Tom Baker episodes on Saturday nights on PBS, though I only half paid attention at the time. I got into it myself around the age of eight when I stumbled into The Five Doctors while channel surfing. I already knew the basic concept of the TARDIS and there being multiple Doctors (because my uncle had explained all that to me) and remembered not having really looked at the show seriously before. I was starting to get a lot more into science fiction and fantasy by then, though, so I decided to give it a chance. So, I watched the rest of the episode, which then led into a showing of The Creature from the Pit. I was hooked from that point on. (Of course, much later I realized how horrifyingly silly the creature was in that episode from a special effects standpoint, but that's another topic entirely...) oWho: Troughton <3 <3 <3, Davison, Baker/McCoy (but I kind of love them all) nWho: Eccleston, Tennant I really wish there was more Troughton available. I used to think of him as being too panicked and ineffectual (largely due to The Mind Robber) until I got to see the reconstructions of his missing episodes and realized how brilliant he actually was. I hope they manage to uncover more from his era.

Tom Baker/Lalla Ward Australian Prime Computer AdsThese ads are irrevocably imprinted in my brain as a Tom Baker association. (They were dvd extras.) Baker, kinda sweet. Lalla, not my favorite companion. (That prolly goes for Romana overall though, in all fairness.) [/p]

There was a split second that I thought The Master would turn out to be Romana this past season.
