My friend also ran Little Wizards by Crafty Games for them, which is apparently also a very good entry-level game. I haven't picked it up yet, but it's on the list.

The only thing I didn't like about the beginner boxed set was the fact that there were no rules for character creation at all. You pretty much have to play the characters that are given as they are given. I understand the reasoning for that, but I would have liked the option at least to maybe even switch some stuff up on a pre-gen or have a clue about how characters are made. I use that as a bit of litmus test on a game. Most importantly though the box comes with the dice, which are crucial. That's actually true of the D&D 5e and Pathfinder beginner sets as well. While philosophically I agree with you. I like to see how characters go together, not the end point, but for the target (which is people who do not yet play at all) it's not a bad approach. Get them to the fun exciting game play part of it, and once they're hooked then expose them to the character creation rules. JiB

I have ideas kicking around for an Age of Rebellion one shot. Well slightly modifies AoR where the PCs play the good guys.

How is the modified from the base game? The base game assumes you are playing the rebel terrorists.

What those reactionary religious nutters that want to return to some medieval social order, when we all have to what some self-appointed order of robe-wearing "Knights" says, just because they claim theay are connected with "The Force"? No thank you. You know they cut people's hands off, for like, minor crimes like public disorder!? The modern Empire is a meritocracy, where hard work is rewarded. The so-called "Rebellion" is a threat to our society.

I picked up the core book for Edge of the Empire at the convention, and after reading through the character generation and game mechanics sections, I'm sold. At the very least, I'll run a couple scenarios at the next convention. And once the DnD game reaches it's story end, I'll probably start up a campaign of it. One big bummer: no PDFs. I'm sure it's a licensing issues, but in today's market, the mind reels at how popular this game could be if it was available electronically. I can't wait to try out the dice mechanic at a table. Yea, FFG does not own the rights to electronic versions of the Star Wars license, so they can not make PDFs. However, they are allowed to distribute digital material for free -- they just can't sell electronic copies. In fact, they have excellent online support for their line in the form of free adventures, modular encounters, pre-gens, etc. on their site. So there's that, at least.
