The pronunciation phenomenon never bothered me. But in my high school Japanese class, we picked Japanese names instead of translations/changed pronunciations. So when my friends and I realized we could correctly spell Chewbacca with the Japanese syllables, I chose that name, obviously.
With some hesitation, my teacher consented. She told me that the name could mean "waves running through the universe," "loyal house flower," or "loyal moron," and that native speakers would hear #3.

I mostly deal with people swapping the Y for an I in Bryan, and adding extra Ls and/or Ds in Loyd (damn you, Gyan!). As a Welshman, I have you point out that's it's YOU spelling Lloyd wrong I was in New Quay over the New Year; there's a house there called Llareggub.

Wow, there are a lot of Brians here. I also get the "brain" thing. And sometimes the Y thing. But I live in a country that can't pronounce my name as it is, due to their syllabary. Now I think of it as just another way to say my name. When people try to pronounce my last name, they frequently de-Anglicize it to German pronunciation, which I also enjoy. Or medium-idiot, as opposed to small or large: 中馬鹿. Phonetically, I think they'd hear the Star Wars character's name and laugh with you.

The thing here that kills me is people who spell their name just like a common name but pronounce it oddly and get pissed when you get it wrong. Like Deborah as DeBOREuh. Or Michael as MickAHel. As a call center guy I try hard to get names right and most people appreciate it.
