Those are very good points Monkeyfun Dave. You should take the expectations, experiences, and maturity levels of your group into consideration as well. Monsterhearts and Apocalypse World might require a higher maturity and comfort level as the both deal with sex, MH especially. Some PbtA games are better written than other as well, as you said. I've seen people say they had a great time with it, but personally I thought tremulus was a steaming pile of garbage. I'd stay away from it. Dungeon World is probably the most common entry point, as nearly everyone is familiar with fantasy media tropes. It doesn't assume any particular tone, and can be played as gonzo slapstick fun or ultra-gritty depending on the tastes of the group with no changes in mechanics. It also might be the most straightforward in what the players are expected to do: why, go on fantasy adventures, of course. All that being said, I do think the GM being excited about the game they're running is important. Even if your players are super excited about a fantasy game, if you aren't, you're not going to be that motivated to read through the book.

I think that Masks and Monster of the Week can work similarly well....

I think out of all the PbtA games I've played/run, The Sprawl was the easiest. While the players help create parts of the world (each gets to make a Megacorp that will exist), the structure of the mission system and moves makes it really easy to parse. The book is well written and the G+ community is good if you need help.

Just going to suggest The Warren, I find it a reality approachable PBTA game. And I'm not convinced of the wisdom of trying a known genre in PBTA, i suggest taking players out of their comfort zone*, will make them more open to new ways to doing things. *Not too far out of their comfort zone though - playing Lesbian Fighter Pilots on the Eastern Front may, depending on the group be a little too much.

That's an actual thing. Huh. Well, they were not all lesbian, and they were night bomber pilots, but yeah. Ask gina and jazzisblues

Yeah, I assumed they weren't all lesbian. But I did think that female fighter pilots of the Eastern front was something you came up with all anus extractus style. But no. It's a thing.
Whoda thunk?

Night Witches is a game I own, but haven't gotten a chance to play yet. As it's based on actual history and is set during a non-fictional WWII, it's a game I would constantly worry about "getting right".

Made by the maker of Stu's favorite RPG, Fiasco! Winky Face emojii. Jason's a fun dude, and gives fun depressing advice about designing games, like: "Do you hate the game yet? If not, then you aren't finished with it."

The way the game is set up, it seems to me that it would be pretty hard to get it "wrong" as it were. Just my experience, your mileage may of course vary. JiB

Ok.... so I just finished reading all of the Masks book. I have questions.... 1) How the hell do people think PbtA books are a good first rpg? It expects you to be a good story teller or at least have a great imagination right off the bat. Maybe for theater people? 2) So how do "Custom moves" work? like I don't really see a need for them. Maybe I'm missing something. 3) Do people actually use the "Arc and Hook" stuff or is it just for flavor?
