I laughed so hard at Stu's expression during that gina/ tappy Monsterhearts love-fest. I haven't seen someone that aggressively disinterested in something in a while. "I hated high school. Why would I want to play a game about it?" is something I've heard a few times when pitching the game to new people, Stu Venable. "I'm not into a game about teenage sex/sexuality" is another one. And you know what? I absolutely understand. High school was pretty boring for me, so I enjoy having my characters deal with all the exaggerated teenage drama. But if you actually went through that in real life? Yeah, no. I totally get not wanting to emulate that in a game. There are any number of other games out there, and if a player expresses disinterest or discomfort at the premise of one game, just find something else to play. Which makes me wonder if the listener who wrote in about their inactive Ghoul player fully explained the premise of the game. Dropping someone into a game they're not really into could be another cause of player inaction.

(oh the double entendre...) unsatisfied with MY Monsterhearts style. My group's tastes would be more PG-13 as opposed to my impression of your preferred style (which I will confess is conjecture on my part). I get the impression that your preferred style is a little more R rated. Is that a fair statement?

I get the impression that your preferred style is a little more R rated. Is that a fair statement? Possibly. We still fade to black and say things like "I'm pretty sure we'd fuck now." We're not over here narrating hardcore porn scenes or describing our PC's genitalia. My feeling is that the game gives you both the tools and a space to safely explore a bunch of problematic (or downright fucked up) stuff. And I take full advantage of that. But it's also reading the table. My current group has the same approach I do, but I would absolutely reign it in if that were not the case.

Understood. I did not mean to imply that you wouldn't. Just that you might not get as much enjoyment out of my much tamer style than my group prefers.
Honestly, I would like to work a little more grey into some of my games. I tried to run Candlewick Manor for my group. It's an offshoot of Monsters and Other Childish Things. The characters are all little children. I was looking forward to a deep, sometimes a little uncomfortable game. Instead, we ended up with Addams Family. Now, that was what my players wanted, so I rolled with it, but.... Sadness for opportunities lost.

I wasn't saying that I would or would not enjoy your group's playstyle, as I haven't seen you play. Like you said, I don't have enough info to make an informed decision either way. In my experience, it's GMs who most often change their plans to fit with what the table wants. Which makes a certain kind of sense. There are very often more players than GMs sitting around the table, and so the majority rules. But the GM often has a lot more influence over what happens in the game than the players, as they are very often in charge of everything apart from the PCs. If the GM wants a darker, more disturbing game for example, they just need to have the world around the PCs behave in a manner that supports the tone they're aiming for. The possible issue there though is, for lack of a better term, an imbalance of power. Being in charge of everything apart form the PCs, it can seem like the GM has more power than the players. Pushing things in a certain direction to evoke a specific tone might make the players feel like they're being forced down paths they don't want to take, or that their input is being ignored. That leads to unhappy players, which is never good. So we come back around to the GM acquiescing to the players' wants by changing the tone of the game. Of course the way to avoid that is, as with almost every other problem, by talking to your players. You all sit down and reach a consensus on what elements you want to include and explore in the game. That doesn't mean things won't go astray as the game progresses. But it does give everyone a baseline. It allows the GM, and the players, to say "Hey. Remember how we were going for a dark and disturbing game? I don't really think that action fits the type of story we're trying to tell." Or you take the opportunity to reevaluate and make sure everyone is still happy with how things are going.

Speaking of Monsterhearts, which douchebag do I have to blow to get this episode uploaded to iTunes? As far as I know, no Skin has a sex move that says "After giving a blowjob, upload the latest Happy Jacks podcast to iTunes." I think you're out of luck, chronovore. 😀

My webspace has been hacked, and I’m not able to upload anything to my FTP. On Monday, I’ll call them and see if they can fix my FTP block.
