Still listening but I had to stop to shout out to gina for namechecking Fria Ligan’s Year Zero system’s elegance and flexibility. Because I started with Coriolis, I don’t agree that it’s the least successful application of the Year Zero Engine, but I am willing to blame that on my own biases. What impressed me most is how a system that works as a traditional "adversarial" system (GM rolling against the players - as it was built for MY0) also works so well as a player-facing narrative system for Tales From the Loop. There are pushing the system into the crunchier end fo the scale with the upcoming Forbidden Lands retro-fantasy RPG. I have played test the alpha version of that and found that it’s made the GM work a LOT harder that TFTL, with many many more rules to remember. cadave would not find it as easy to switch into as he said Tales was.

Wow, we’re on fire for systems I love: Cortex Prime is a development of Cortex Plus, which powered the Firefly RPG. The experience there is aposite to your discussion on levelling your characters from zero to hero. As it points out Firefly characters a competent Big Damn Heroes from the outset, but you can CHANGE (rather than improve) your character as the series progresses. Improvement isn’t ruled out, you can for example spend XP (actually episodes - but that naming convention is another story) to acquire a signature weapon, for example, just as halfway through the show Jayne brings out “Vera”.
And then you offer Pelgrane some love too! Though I feel I should point out Cthulhu Dark is self published by Graeme Walmsley, it’s nothing to do with Pelgrane (as far as I am aware at least).

fredrix the Year Zero system would be great for a world of darkness game. The Genlab Alpha variant is all about the animal/human side of the characters and I feel that that would translate great for a Vampire/werewolf game.

It’s a development of the original storyteller system. The only “design” by FriaLigan is layout.

Since the "Misty Mountains" song was just a few verses in the movie, someone did the entire lengthy poem in that same musical style. It's 20 minutes long!

cadave just wondering dude, you do know the Empire from Star Wars were Nazis, right? Like, all the planets they had control of were oppressed and drained, and aliens were usually purged because the Emperor was super racist. Even the few aliens that did work alongside the Empire, like the Chiss, were still looked down upon and thought of as less than. So, like, any story that takes place from soldiers of the Empire's point of view should be thought about in that lens. Like, unless the characters are described as being taken from their home as a child and indoctrinated you might not want to empathize with them.

Not all soldiers fighting for an evil leader are evil, some are misguided or have been lied to. That is what would make that kind of story interesting. reddit.com/r/empiredidnothingwrong

Yeah, I am with joecrak on this one. The so called “terrorist attack” was upon a military vessel that HAD JUST DESTROYED A PLANET. Every one of those killed on the Death Star were culpable. They had signed up to fight a war. “Never Forget, Never Forgive” is the sort of nonsense that results in ethnic cleansing in the Balkans. Nazis. Not “fine people on both sides”. Nazis There are no good troopers except Finn

On the discussion about the switch back to L5R 4e I have to say I think the comments about the beta were rather harsh. Yes it had issues but it was also a free beta release with rules that were in flux.
I feel like that probably made it a bad match for the AP given the focus leans more towards the narrative than mechanics. A beta like that works best when players and GM are more inclined to try and grok the rules.

I feel like that probably made it a bad match for the AP given the focus leans more towards the narrative than mechanics. A beta like that works best when players and GM are more inclined to try and grok the rules. Aside from those who don't like the dice mechanic, I think their biggest complaint was that through the process of updates and revisions, the beta doc just became too unwieldy to use easily. As for the dice, you often hear people say it is really important to come up with those extra boost or setback narratives. This is terrible advice. If there is something obvious that fits the situation or otherwise quickly comes to mind, go with that. Otherwise, just move on and apply the mechanical boost or setback. It's just an indication of how the ebb and flow of upcoming events may go. Don't over think it.
