As some of you may have noticed from a few threads I am also taking up the Traveller-Firefly gauntlet. I documented the Firefly 'Verse using a couple different resources. I'm playing after the events of Miranda where the Alliance has lost a little of its grip on the border planets but the core worlds are still firmly in their grasp. The Firefly Wiki firefly.wikia.com/wiki/White_Sun_systemThe Verse in Numbers PDF firefly.wikia.com/wiki/The_Verse_in_NumbersThat helped me work out the details of all the planets in the Verse for any of the planets that had cannon around them. I entered them all into an excel spreadsheet. Anything in Black has Cannon around it. Anything with blue letters is completely open to my whims. dl.dropbox.com/u/13864212/Firefly%20Traveller/The%20Verse/Firefly%20Universe_Current.xlsxIf you find this useful please feel free to use it. As far as FTL - My understanding is that Joss Whedon has stated that there is no FTL travel or communications in Firefly. This hasn't been strictly adhered to (Hello Serenity) but I plan to make this the case in my game. I have some alternate drive mechanics house ruled to explain the propulsion systems without breaking into FTL.

I think on one episode Tappy may have mentioned customizing the Traveller Chargen system for another genre.

Definitely not ... At least not so nearly as robust a history. Looking forward to fleshing out the history and then letting the players get to know this npc

I wanted to create an NPC for my soon to launch Traveller campaign. This will be an early NPC the players will have the opportunity to ally or offend.
My concept was for an "old" character that has been around and as such he/she would have a lot of terms under their belt. I figured this was also a good way to learn the character generation process. It was in this process that I wrote my Traveller Character Generation flowchart (Available from the Traveller forum).
I started out as a Scout and made the role. I chose Exploration and made it 3 terms. Gained some skills, and made two enemies in 3 terms. The ejection came after an ambush and I failed an engineering role (at -3). He still mustered out with a Scout ship and 50K.
After that I decided the NPC would walk the other side of the law for a time, being bitter over his unfair dismissal and spent two terms as a pirate. After gaining a 3rd enemy who forced him out of Piracy my new NPC set his sights on Merchant. He decided there was money out there and he wanted it all. He mustered out here with over 100K and with a scoutship he has everything needed to get started
The merchant role of 5 was failed by 2 so into the draft he went as a Star Marine at the age of 38. At this point he started taking Anagathics and spent 4 terms as a Star Marine (he had a high End to start with). He walked away with souvenier armor and a TAS membership for his heroics under fire.
At 54 he was really ready to settle down into a life as a free trader. A 7 isn't so bad - unless you role a 6 . . .
A term as a drifter scavenger and I'll try again. At this point I am pretty invested in this NPC. He will be a merchant. He's been making his aging role well with only a couple points to buy back for 5Kea. He has plenty of cash.
After a term as a Scavenger with an increase on Jack of All Trades (to 2) he needs to role a 7. Easy Peasy - think Positive - you're journey will be over soon my pet! Unless you're rolling 6's. Second serving of Scavenger coming right up. You can't have any pudding unless you eat your beats!
Hang in there man - you'll get it next time!
This term in Drifter resulted in a ship share (another?) and an event that resulted in him forcibly drafted into the Navy!
Based on his current skills being in Piloting he decided to be a pilot. Two terms as a pilot with an honorable discharge, he now has a target of 8 to become a trader.
AN 8!!! HEGOTANEIGHT w00t!!!
I settled down to get a few terms of free trader in before settling him in as a successful merchant somewhere the PCs will start near to encounter.
In his first term he storked (2) his second survival role and then his free trading company went bankrupt on the Mishap table (6).
This NPC is fucking AWESOME!!!! He's going to be a 74 year old spacecraft parts scavenger (back to drifter) with his own space junkyard in some asteroid belt (he still had substantial personal savings). He'll be a cross between Dale Gribble from King of the Hill and Scooter from Borderlands 1 & 2! Even though he looks about 38 he has a whole lifetime of squashed dreams to be bitter about.
Also - he has an irrational hatred of free traders!

JiB - I've done a fair amount of video editing. Having been into Warhammer 40K in a previous life - I know that many hours of painting is just spent in silence and you often times are controlling your breath as you go. I would be pleased to offer my services free of charge to put together video clips using your raw footage that you could then put whatever audio you wanted over. Just a thought

A persons job as a GM is completely dependent on their perception of where the game is going. I have only ever played in long term campaigns. I have only ever GM'd long campaigns.
Once a long time ago (the early 90s) I ran a D&D 2e campaign based completely on a series of books. It was very railroady but the players said it was an amazing game and the story worked really well. I effectively gave them the character concepts for the two protagonists from the book series and then I turned them loose in the world of the book. I presented them with plot hooks and occasionally plot anchors to progress the overall story along the books plot but their choices were their own and they didn't achieve the same ending as the book. If anything my players ending was far more epic!
A few years later I ran a D&D 2e Spelljammer campaign that went on for almost 3 years. I wasn't sure what was going where and the players themselves ended up defining the campaign with me feeling like I was along for the ride much of the time. Again the players said the game was exceedingly fun and I had a blast just trying to keep up with all their ideas and crazy plans.
As a storyteller in long term campaigns I feel like my job is to tell the story my players want to take part in. This is rarely the story I initially conceived but in both the cases above - the story the players wanted ended up much more fun than anything I could have conceived.

THANK YOU Stu! I didn't see that box but now that I have the word "Profile" I was able to search the PDF and find it. For some reason my eyes glance over those grey boxes like they don't exist. For as many hours as I've spent listening to your dulcet tones, getting advice from you is like getting advice from an friend! Thank you for answering a newb question!
