I am listening to the beginning of the duel right now and I have some things I want to ask/point out.
A raise can be used for anything that it can be used for in combat. So, by right the Kakita could have made raises for an extra attack(assuming he had enough void or the advantage that allows him to use skill instead), or he could have used them to make Dave look like a fool with a precisely aimed and called strike[font=(Ok, so you figured this one out eventually.). Also, if you do extra damage the scale is like this: 1 raise=1 rolled die, 2 raises=1 rolled and 1 kept die, 3 raises=2 rolled and 1 kept die, etc.
Dave! Why didn't you use your void!?! I was screaming at my phone during the duel set up to use your void. Since I'm not done with the scene yet I can only assume you are saving it to soak damage and try to out last the bastard.
Stu, I think you forgot about the Kakita technique. Again, I haven't finished listening... but I didn't hear you account for it. I mean the technique gives you a 1k1 after being in a Center stance, and you kept 3. I doubt his Reflexes was 2.

Yeah, we're learning.
But I appreciate the feedback. I do forget stuff like that.

Yes the duel felt like a thousand L5R rules lawyers were screaming in agony and suddenly silenced... Still fun to listen to. Btw the raises for damage have changed in 4e, they just give you 1k0 for each raise.

See, I was under the impression that you have to declare raises BEFORE you roll, and if you miss your revised TN you miss.

See, I'm still not clear on this free raise thing.
I was under the impression that you get to add free raises AFTER you'd MADE your roll, rather than use them as a bonus to your roll.
As in, " so I made my roll to hit, and now I want to use my free raises to hit him in the sword arm."
I need to re-read that shit.

I just read this, they work just like normal raises but they can also lower the TN by 5. Also by the way did you add the kakita school bushi 1 technique bonus to the iaijutsu rolls? It applies as well since you are considered to be in center stance while duelling. You also add the bonuses for center stance in the round after the duel in case of a duel to the death. That's what makes the kakita so awesome in duels.

Nor did he or Dave use a void point. If the Kakita had used ALL his faculties available... Nikoma would be No Mo'

I think the most important thing there, regardless of rules, is he completely botched that attack. Not much can help you recover from such a shitty role in any system. Dave did not wear a shirt that Stork liked, but Stork must've touched Stu before the role.

Yes, I was keeping three. Didn't even think of the bonus.

While it's nice to gently point out where rules may have been overlooked during the game, and especially during the Duel; one has to remember, especially those that are long time fans of the game, that they're are still learning the game system. Nikoma's duel was also the first time they were taking that particular subsystem out for a spin. Mistakes are to be expected; it's only normal. I think the important thing in that seen was the drama that the situation represented for the players, and in that the game succeeded. I know I was biting my nails listening - Midnight

Also both guys received the technique bonus so no one gained the upper hand in the duel by not applying. Despite all the bonuses and techniques however, Nicoma HAD to win since the kakita was a disgrace, the gods of dice and the celestial heavens favour the honorable.

I was standing there paying such close attention to the podcast that I almost got hit by a forklift at work. That will teach me to take a duel onto a production floor. Regards, Walt

So I was screaming during the duel but I mostly screamed "he is dead" when the "other" samurai hideomo or something not Kobe was hanging around the complex after I could have sworn his body had been found in the hills with 2 daggers in his chest starting this whole misadventure.
