I am listening to the beginning of the duel right now and I have some things I want to ask/point out. A raise can be used for anything that it can be used for in combat. So, by right the Kakita could have made raises for an extra attack(assuming he had enough void or the advantage that allows him to use skill instead), or he could have used them to make Dave look like a fool with a precisely aimed and called strike[font= (Ok, so you figured this one out eventually.). Also, if you do extra damage the scale is like this: 1 raise=1 rolled die, 2 raises=1 rolled and 1 kept die, 3 raises=2 rolled and 1 kept die, etc. Dave! Why didn't you use your void!?! I was screaming at my phone during the duel set up to use your void. Since I'm not done with the scene yet I can only assume you are saving it to soak damage and try to out last the bastard. Stu, I think you forgot about the Kakita technique. Again, I haven't finished listening... but I didn't hear you account for it. I mean the technique gives you a 1k1 after being in a Center stance, and you kept 3. I doubt his Reflexes was 2. Oh my god I did the same thing! I was standing there paying such close attention to the podcast that I almost got hit by a forklift at work. That will teach me to take a duel onto a production floor. Regards, Walt lol careful Walt. The one thing I have learned, from this very entertaining and most excellent podcast, is that L5R seems unnecessarily complex. So to all those who may shudder at a rule inaccuracy, just know some of us have no fucking clue why any of it makes any sense to anyone. The free raises on his Water wakarimasen roll against the center stance Mountain Pose give him a +1 to his konbini skill but the TN is at +5 because the feng shui but don't worry I have a Void Point. Shitsumon!? But in fucking 2 days time is amazing.

Another engaging live play, Stu. My only suggestion might be to work on the narrations of the combat a bit more. Get into a bit more detail and give your listeners and players more to imagine. Then again, it's something I really lack at, too, so I totally feel you!

While it's nice to gently point out where rules may have been overlooked during the game, and especially during the Duel; one has to remember, especially those that are long time fans of the game, that they're are still learning the game system. Nikoma's duel was also the first time they were taking that particular subsystem out for a spin. Mistakes are to be expected; it's only normal. I think the important thing in that seen was the drama that the situation represented for the players, and in that the game succeeded. I know I was biting my nails listening - Midnight Don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing them. I was just pointing out what they missed so that they can pick it up next time. That's it. I am loving the hell out of this Actual Play. I -HATE- actual plays with a passion because invariably they are wrought with screaming kids, people leaning away from microphones, talking too softly, eating into the microphone, ice clinking in glasses, etc. A big bunch of annoying sounds basically, its like having 13 kids playing Hungry Hungry Hippos into a megaphone. Makes my ears bleed. The Happy Jacks actual plays are the first ones that haven't made me want to stab myself in the face while listening. I am totally engrossed. Oh, and one more comment now that I've finished the episode. USE YOUR VOID! Think of them as Bennies. They do a -LOT- of stuff and can be refreshed with that handy tea ceremony skill. I have a house rule as well that helps them replenish(carried over from first edition)... If a die explodes more than once on a single roll, get a bonus void point.

You know, I have a file which list every PC with a Name I've introduced to the game. When they die, I change their text to strikethrough.
I forgot to look at the damn document when I did Tyler's sidebar!

Because I fear my comments are being taken the wrong way I want to make it very clear that I love this actual play, that I am not in any way meaning to criticize you guys, and that I am just trying to help you get more into the setting and the world and the game. I hope you don't think otherwise.
That being said, I find it immensely entertaining that you guys are playing a single clan game yet each player is falling very much into what I see as clan specific stereotypes. Tyler... is the stereotypical Crab. CADave, a man after my own heart, is playing the best Akodo ever. Stork, to me, is playing a really great Shiba of the Phoenix. This makes me smile.

Not sure if you think my comment was directed at you Guido-San, but it was not. As per usual I am just making a silly statement that would be much funnier in person. ;D

Another engaging live play, Stu. My only suggestion might be to work on the narrations of the combat a bit more. Get into a bit more detail and give your listeners and players more to imagine. Then again, it's something I really lack at, too, so I totally feel you! I was just listening to the final moments of this AP and I can't go on enough about how good this thing sounds! I've got these high end DJ headphones and I can hear the compression but the clarity of voices and lac k of buzz or fuzz is really refreshing. I don't think I want to start doing AP's for our group until I can get near this quality of sound. Having said that, I do have some thoughts. I noticed that with the G christ game that Stu and group were much more likely to utilize accents and voices and heavy characterization. While the L5R games it seems to be a good deal less. Is this because of all the nonverbal communication happening at the table vs a game on the webs ? I've noticed that for our games as well. I've had to rely a great deal more on really over the top accents to get my NPC's and characters to stand out with a Skype or G+ game. I also would love to hear some more descriptive narration of combats. Such descriptions can be tax on GM's creative resources and it has been said before on this podcast those descriptions are often the first to go when a GM is doing some knife juggling(i.e. combat, rp, record keeping, "oh and what does the wound look like ?"...does L5R utilize hit locations ? But, there definitely seems to be a desire to create not only a great game for those sitting around the table but a great listening experience as well. Perhaps allowing the PC's to describe their successes and failures might take some of the load off of Stu-san? Keep up the great work! I'm really looking forward to trying this system for the first time with Sir Guido. Cheers.

Personally, I'm not affecting an accent because of the setting of the game. A Rokugan accent is not one I can do well, and could easily slide into something bordering on offensive.

I actually noticed a shift from the first one or two episodes of the L5R podcast, where both Stu and the players seemed a little dry in their roleplaying. Whereas in the last few episodes, everyone seems to have a much stronger sense of their characters, which comes across in their speech patterns as much as their actions. The game has a much more "in-character" feel, despite not using crappy accents.

Agreed! I really appreciated the in depth battle descriptions as well as the increasing level of characterization that has become a part of the APs. As far as "accents" go, in our APs with Sir Guido my crab bushi has a "accent" and by that I mean a "voice" that is somewhat different from my own. I hope this helps the others know when I'm speaking in character. I have no desire to affect a crappy, quasi-racist accent. Just something other than my normal speaking voice.

I agree as well. When we get into more RP in SirGuido's game, I'll develop more of a "voice" for my character, but it's not really going to be an accent. I only do that when I'm just fucking around and making dumb jokes, and even then it's not something I'd do around most people.
