Yeah, I actually think I'm gonna play a lady witch, so I'd like a goth/punk lady. Red hair would be nice. "Lady" witch? So... like... you want to be "classy" or something? Heh. I haven't gotten to see a Witch in play yet. This is going to be interesting. Hmmm... punk would probably be good. Yeah, I like punk. Yeah, me too. Punk's good. We very well may have three female PCs, if D.T. Pints decides to play as a girl too.

Hey guys. I haven't been on the boards that often recently, but just wanted to check that we're still good for this weekend. I'm trying to prepare myself for all the curveballs I know you guys will toss at me, which is, if course, impossible.

Oh yes ! Lou Anne Lorraine Sypher her new friends (which is everybody...) all call her Lou Lou. Straight outta o' the swampy back water town of Gators Bottom of Southern Georgia but she tells everyone she is of only the finest families from Savannah. A real southern belle, a Georgia Peach, not from some ditch water shack hidden in the sprawling live oaks and spanish moss.
I think I'll stick with the Queen skin. Just that she became a queen through diabolical means and now she's got everyone wanting her for a friend or a fuck...See ya Saturday!

Hey Chris,
Things were feeling a bit "crickety" no responses??? about todays game...I hadn't seen Foresst or ScubaSteve on here in a bit. I thought we were looking to play 3 p.m. AK time but I wasn't sure. I'll check in later today and see what plans may be fomenting.
Cheers,
Curt.

Hi guys. Sorry for the confusion. I'd thought we were sticking with the times from back on page 2:
Osaka - 10am to 2pm LA & Canada - 6pm to 10pm Alaska - 5pm to 9pm
Does that still work for everyone? Starting in about 2 and a half hours?

Hey D.T. I'm able to start the session an hour earlier, to 4pm AK time (so in 45 minutes) so long as the others are available too.

Thanks again for the game Hyve! The more that I get to play these Apocalypse World games the more I like them. There is definitely a real shift in mindset (besides trying to RP a sociopathic, semi-human, psychic, teenage girl...) of becoming a PROACTIVE player and making an effort to not only be a part of the fiction but actively create it. I told my wife about Monsterhearts and now she wants to play...she's a Buffy fiend. (and thats not the name of a new skin) One offs seem more challenging to create with Monsterhearts because as we talked about the game is really PvP driven and the storylines become quite convoluted and interesting and to do them justice in a four hour (3.5) session feels a tad bit forced. But now we have this world we four created in just a few hours with a huge number of potential story arcs, twists and turns. I kept trying to figure out how to engage in interesting conflict with the other players without having it dissolve into a bash fest/last monster standing event. It would seem to be much more interesting to allow that tension to build throughout several sessions and possibly having it come to a big finale/bloodbath then. Takes a lot of trust in your player group though...I certainly wouldn't want to behave like a murderous bitch to people I don't know that well. Foresst made that game AWESOME! with her flashing scalpel (not named fire, or twinkle ). I was so wrapped up with building my little clique and gang and settling into this queen persona I honestly as a player didn't think that anybody would fuck with me...getting used to the game occurred much more rapidly after my main henchman lay at the spooky girl's feet in a pool of his own blood. Scuba's witch was getting all tangled up in story lines that could be carried out for several sessions but again in a short one time deal we never got to see the big pay off. Fuckin Principal Scheckman is gonna get soooo cursed! Finally, this was the first time I think I've tried to RP a high school kid since I was in that 332 layer of hell waaaaay back when. Allegorical musings aside, creating monstrous personas of characters in adolescence when everything really is all fucked up is a great way to capture the mood of that time period in our lives. Except this time we have the option to devour the home room teacher. If only... Cheers all, D.T.

Thanks for playing D.T. I think you had the most disturbing Queen I've ever heard of or seen in a Monsterhearts game. I kept imagining some horrible mashup between that inbred "pig family" from The X-Files and the alien parasite thing from The Faculty. Big Daddy and Bubba seriously creeped me the fuck out, and we didn't even see that much of them (or any of Big Daddy). Congratulations. I was well and truly sweating bullets before that game. All I had going into the session was an idea of what Skins you guys were playing, my list of 40 random names, and a few questions to put you guys on the spot. That's it. Everything else got made up on the spot as it was needed. As you noted, the game can really fall apart if the players aren't proactive. It's my job as MC to stick your characters into situations that demand a response or a reaction (and then to make things worse if you don't react), but that can feel contrived if it happens too often. The game goes much better if the players drive the story and the MC just throws wrenches and complications at them. My first couple games of AW-based stuff fell apart because I felt like I was "cheating". I didn't throw hard moves at the players, which gave them nothing to react to, which gave me nothing to build on, and the game went into a tailspin and died. But those mistakes gave me a better understanding of how to run these games. I don't know if I'd say that one-off of Monsterhearts are more challenging to create. Maybe more... cliffhanger-y? Because you're generating all this fiction as the game progresses, when you get to the end you're like "Oh come on! What happens! Jacob's blackmailed Lou-Lou into a date. What's going to happen? Is he going to get fed to Big Daddy? Merrill's accidentally put Mrs. Williams into a panic-induced seizure. Plus, she's got to go see the way creepy Principal Sheckman after school. After stealing that photo from his desk for 'protection'. And what about Zed? She slashed open Bubba's face with a scalpel in the middle of bio class, decked Zach as she ran from school, and is now stranded in the middle of nowhere after pissing of Nicolas and having him drive away." That's like season-ending cliffhanger stuff. It can kind of be a let down to just leave that hanging. Monsterhearts really does require a lot of trust within the group. As you said, acting like a murderous bitch can make the game end really quickly if things escalate to the "I'm gonna straight up kill you" stage right out of the gate. Because of the way harm works, two or three lash out physically rolls and a PC can end up dead or in the hospital for a long time. There are several ways to avoid that and prolong the tension. Just be straight up with players. Say "Look, if you go straight for the knives (or scalpels) people are going to die, and the game's going to end." Of course the types of players who just want to kill shit probably wouldn't be interested in Monsterhearts in the first place. The other way it to really play out the consequences. You can't be typical D&D-style murder hobos in Monsterhearts; if you cut someone, there's going to be ramifications for your actions. Unless you do it real quiet like so no one knows what you did. You also need a lot of trust within the group because of the sexual content. None of you guys used the turn someone on move against a fellow PC, but that's bound to happen eventually. Especially once you see what you can do with Strings. After that, you start thinking "Holy shit. I need leverage over the other PCs" and the best way to do that? Get them all hot and bothered. That curtails the desire to kill each other, as you'll lose all your Strings on them if they're dead, and it gets you involved in whatever story arc they have going on.

Yeah, that was a really fun game, I really enjoyed it. Thanks for running it Hyvemynd, and I'd love to do it again, if we can.
