Yeah it was interesting to try to think about what hot button topics there actually exist in this community...there's some obvious system hate at times. But we generally as a forum end up saying "I see where you're coming from...having said that..." The name of the fancast was definitely a bit of sarcasm on my part but "some" conflict of ideas done "intelligently" (a tall order for this lot I know) could be a great listen. I'll take your last suggestion (the real one) and go with it...who wants to get on the podium and take a stand for playing a character role no matter how much a pain in the ass it is for the rest of the group ? vs having those disads i.e. low intelligence occur more in mechanical aspects i.e. penalties to dice rolls. Does someone playing a character that uses sentences like "Me Cockhead, me barbarian, me smash" sound delightful or horrible ?
Example:
In our current Pathfinder campaign (APs coming soon) I am playing a gnome bard that constantly drones on in a horrendous nasal voice (think Ringo Starr meets Liberaci meets Stewie from Family Guy). I personally think he's a hilarious character to play, my friends...they hate him, or at least find him rather annoying. But I'm playing a gnome who is an entertainer, who's also rather unwise and a bit of a drunk.
Thoughts ?

Yes, I'm looking at you l5r. You dirty [insert Australian word for friend]! But we generally as a forum end up saying "I see where you're coming from...having said that..." But I'm playing a gnome who is an entertainer, who's also rather unwise and a bit of a drunk. Thoughts ? Hmmm...if the group as a whole doesn't like the PC that is kind of hard. In a recent Traveller game I speak of sometimes I rolled terribly in Character Gen I had planned on playing a Mechanic in the vein of Scotty or Kaylee. I ended up playing a drug using drunk loser like the Dude meets Dave Lister. He could make a solid mechanic roll, but pretty much all other skills were not so great. I did my bad Cheech Marin impression for the voice and he was usually drunk or high at all times. He got everyone into more trouble than was necessary. I can think of at least 3 times he should have died, but the other players kept rescuing him every time he got into trouble, because they thought he was funny. So I guess my advice is try to putting the gnome in a tight spot. If he dies make it as big as possible, but if the other players save him they do love him.

I think it's interesting to point out the difference between campaign and con-game in regards to playing a poor PC. Recently played in a Dread con-game and I was a Sudoku addict that would start into it during stressful situations. When the group needed me to be a lookout while they were fixing the failed engine in our truck, which should take 30 minutes (or 20 or 10 minutes with enough Jenga pulls), I told them straight up my attention span was about 10 minutes, and then I'm doing Sudoku. They decided not to pull blocks, so I wasn't watching after the first 10. Playing disads for story relevance and possible death is great, when PC investment is minimal (con-game), however if you are running a year-long campaign I can see where constantly plunging the party into trouble, or just having an annoying voice or personality, can be a dicey affair. I mean, it can work if they love you, but if they are annoyed, that'd get old pretty quick.

Hot button? **CENSORED**. Oh you , well some one had to say it - I tried to be oblique using 'Matters of System' so as to avoid attracting the Eye of Sauron . . . Aaron

There is an argument here? The answer is always beards. It's as nature intended.Who wants to get on the podium and take a stand for playing a character role no matter how much a pain in the ass it is for the rest of the group ? vs having those disads i.e. low intelligence occur more in mechanical aspects i.e. penalties to dice rolls. Does someone playing a character that uses sentences like "Me Cockhead, me barbarian, me smash" sound delightful or horrible ? Ugh... I am so on the fence about this. On the one hand, I remember the shitty rogue we had to deal with in a game. He always jumped into situations without thinking and said the wrong things (low Wisdom) and was about 10 years younger than my character. She hated his incredibly immature attitude about everything. Additionally, I hated the player for making him such an annoying prick. He took it too far and it would make my skin crawl. On the other hand, we once had someone play a wizard with narcolepsy and neurosyphilis. He was fucking crazy and he'd wake up with a different personality every time he went to sleep (so many naps...) and it was hilarious. Even though we only played one session with Sleepy STD wizard (three with annoying rogue) I don't think it would have gotten annoying because the player knew when to dial it back. He gave us just enough without being in your face. At some level, the party needs to be able to gel. That can't happen if someone is constantly going against the grain of the other party members. That's how you end up with PC on PC violence.

DT,
If you're doing one of these on a Thursday, Friday, or Sunday night and want someone to argue against many of the status quo assumptions around here...
My topic suggestion: Narrative vs. Mechanics
Could also be interested in chiming in about special snowflake characters and when to dial back your compulsive masturbator wild mage.
