Decided to put a thread here about the 1 page adventure contest.
I'm working on the submission guidelines now.
A few things:
I'm thinking about calling it "Two Sides: One Epic." Anyone have a funnier/catchier name for it? I'm totally open to suggestions.
I'm leaning toward requiring system-agnosticism. Thoughts?
Here are the settings I'm thinking of including: - Fantasy - Science Fiction - Modern - Other Historical - Other
And I'm thinking of also including optional flavors: - Pulp - Horror - Amaaaaaaazing! (weird/misc/furry)
Additions?

I really like the name. It stands out differently then one sheets, and the one page dungeons. I also agree for system-agnostic. Even though I am a fan of the "Game that Shall Not be Named (Savage Worlds)". I think the agnostic method will allow for all of us Jacker's to use everything that comes out of it.
As for the Categories. I like all of them, I was just curious on "Other Historical". Is there a reason it isn't simply "Historical"? Is it because it is loosely based on Historical events? maybe "Historical Fiction"?

Good point. It'll just be "historical."

I think you could separate Historical from Alternate-World Historical maybe. I could see putting like, Steampunk or stuff in that.

I'm in. And my preference would strongly be for system agnostic adventures. Maybe we could come up with a "Challenge Rating Scale" or something to rate encounters on how difficult they should be, and some system specific examples in the back of the book.
Not to nit-pick, but couldn't Pulp, Horror, and Amaaaaaaazing! be overlays? Like, if I design a 1930's pulp adventure set in the "real" world, where would it go? Pulp or Modern?

Maybe the best way to handle the categories, is similar to gmail using labels instead of folders. Each Epic could have a Categories list, that can have multiple labels. Fantasy, modern, horror as an example for a single epic. Then simply have a table in the front or back that has each Category, and list all of the Epics that fare included in that Category?

That's a really good idea. I'll change it to that.

That sounds better. Plus, "Amaaaaaaazing!" works better as a tag or a label than as a genre. Of course, that means everyone is going to include that label in their submission, because everyone will think their own adventure is Amaaaaaaazing! Heh.
Ooh. Here's another question. What age range are we aiming for? I've put some pretty adult themes in my games before. Cue the cheesy porn music and disco lighting! Oh yeah... ;D

Same age range as the podcast, I'd imagine.

Looking forward to the submission guidelines. I've never really tried to do something like this before so it will be interesting. I'll be doing a Fantasy submission ... that's pretty much my only RPG experience.

I'd love to put together a Steampunk offering, once the guidelines are ironed out.
I also agree that tags are a superior system to folders.
Please include an example pdf of a two-side with the guidelines. This will help everyone be on the same page when designing their adventures.

I have a horror one-page that I totally want to throw together! I'm in if you do this, Stu!

i was thinking that page specifications should be brought up, last thing you need is someone to submit their "one page" and it turning out to be in extremely small print so that it could fit an actual page's length....just a thought

I just finished writing a sample 2 sided epic and I stepped down the font size from 12 to 11 to get everything to fit.
So, yeah, there'll be a minimum font size. I could see it getting ridiculous if someone were verbose.

Here is the latest draft of the guidelines.
----------
Happy Jacks RPG Podcast is proud to announce our first annual "2 Sided Epic" Contest.
Write up and submit your single-sheet (double sided) adventure for a chance to win (soon-to-be-determined) fabulous prizes.
We will collect submission through Summer 2012 and announced the winners some time after that (probably August or September).
Guidelines
1. All submission must meet the following guidelines (these guidelines are subject to change or revision without notice):
2. Each submission must fit on both sides of a single 8.5" x 11" (letter-size) sheet of paper with .5" margins all around.
3. Body text size of all submissions must be at least 10 pt.
4. All submissions must be submitted in the following formats: image file (.png, .gif, .jpg), Open Office Text document or PDF.
5. Submissions must be system-agnostic. Do no reference any specific rules, stats, combat mechanics, etc. Descriptors should be used to allow GMs to design appropriate combat encounters, determine necessary skill checks, etc. (see Difficulty Ratings below).
6. Submissions must NOT include any copyrighted text, artwork or other intellectual property.
7. All submissions must clearly state that they are released under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 License.
8. All submissions must, at the top or outside edge of the first page, state the TITLE of the adventure, the AUTHOR (either real name or moniker) and at least one GENRE/FLAVOR tag, which describes the adventure.
9. The GENRE/FLAVOR tags are: Fantasy, Science Fiction, Modern, Historical, Alt History, Pulp, Gritty, Horror, Intrigue, Other and Amaaaaaaazing!
10. By sending in a submission, the submitter agrees and acknowledges that the submission will be collected into a compilation by Happy Jacks RPG Podcast. A pdf version will be made available for free, and a physical, dead tree version may be made available for cost.
Regarding Prizes:
- All entries will be judged by a panel of hosts for creativity, "opportunities for epicness," organization and presentation.
- We are currently seeking out prizes.
- Depending on the number of prizes secured, we may offer one for each GENRE/FLAVOR tag category, or we may combine tags into related groups.
- Prizes will be shipped freight prepaid by us to the Continental US only.
- For winners outside the Continental US, we will determine, at our sole discretion, whether we will provide the prize or some other form of compensation, should shipping costs be deemed prohibitive. Any other form of compensation will be at the sole discretion of the hosts and have no bearing on the collectible or market value of the prize. Winner can elect to prepay the freight, however. Sorry, international shipping can get really pricey, and we're doing this to create a valuable resource for our listeners, not to make money, so spending a grip of cash on freight is not an option.
Difficult Ratings:
Because all entries will be system agnostic and cannot have system-specific statistics, we will adopt the following descriptors for combat encounter and other challenges.
Routine: success is all but guaranteed. For combats, this is an insignificant event. Almost no chance of party injury or death.
Easy: success is likely. For combats, the party outclasses the enemy, and there is a very good chance of success and some chance of injury.
Moderate: success is 50/50. For combats, this is an even fight. The chance of success or defeat is about even. Chance of injury is good.
Difficult: success is unlikely. For combats, the party is outclassed by the enemy and there is a good chance of defeat. Injury and death are likely.
Impossible: success is very unlikely. For combats, the party is overwhelmed by the enemy. Injury and death are inevitable. A TPK is likely.
