Figured I'd start the discussion thread for tonight's (7/7) episode early... ...just kidding. However, please note that the episode has been pushed back a half-hour and will start at 8:30 PM PDT tonight, not 8:00 PM PDT. twitter.com/happyjacksrpg/status/883486522619568128

I saw on the Patreon preview that you're reading my letter. There's one detail I forgot to mention. In this campaign characters have multiple story arcs. When the one for my character is over, I want a completely new one to start. The new one would have no connections to the one we just seemed to have finished. I sent an email, but I'm not sure if you got it in time. I'll mention this again in the chat room just to be sure you don't misunderstand since in many campaigns ending a character's arc means the end of that character (which isn't the case here).

Thanks for reading my email as well!
Tim, I'm liking your new beard. ¡Que macho!
A couple things I didn't clarify in my mail: The players are friends and ex-co-workers who are potentially once-and-future-co-workers, due to the nature of game development and contract software development. I like each of them. Hell, I even like the DM every time we have had a one-on-one conversation, but he's the type of guy whose hackles raise super quickly, but is also the type to "playfully tease" (read: incessantly heckle) in a group.
It's an internet-enabled game played currently on Roll20 for maps/rolling dice, and Discord for audio. I mentioned all the other ways we've connected over the group's history: Google Hangouts, Skype, Roll20's abhorrent web video solution…
As for how a guy stays that angry for 2 hours of ranting, I think he was having a panic attack or something.
I appreciate the insight that though "even bad gaming is better than no gaming" it is possible to acknowledge that I've got better things to do with my time.

People who say that kind of stuff make me think that they don't know what an actual bad game looks like. Either that or they are way desperate for a game. The threshold for how much crap you'll put up with is typically dependent on how much other stuff you want to do. I think the sentiment comes from a time when it was harder to find a game. With online games as available as they are, I can't imagine that people are quite as desperate as they used to be.

Tim, I'm liking your new beard. ¡Que macho! Thank you, sir! As for how a guy stays that angry for 2 hours of ranting, I think he was having a panic attack or something. So... extenuating circumstances of a sort. I still stand by what I said though. Panic attack or not, I think that's unacceptable and something should have been - or should be - said to insure it doesn't happen again. Assuming you want to continue with the group, that is. The threshold for how much crap you'll put up with is typically dependent on how much other stuff you want to do. Exactly; it's a personal decision that each person has to make for themselves. At some point, a bad game becomes not worth your time any longer. For some people, that might be as soon as a game is identified as "bad". For other people, it might be a a session or two after the GM rails on you for a couple of hours because you talked to the wrong NPC. With online games as available as they are, I can't imagine that people are quite as desperate as they used to be. Online games aren't for everybody, though. Like I mentioned on the show, I really do not enjoy running Hangout/Skype style games. Playing isn't a problem; while playing a Hangout/Skype game, I don't mind taking a back seat as everyone talks over each other, or someone's connection goes fuzzy and you can only make out every third word they say or something. But as a GM, having to wrangle all the players around stuff like that... it's just not worth it to me. I'd rather run a PbP or wait until I can GM an actual table.

Have you played in a weekly game online as opposed to one shots? I find that one shots magnify the problems of online gaming because you have to deal with all the set up issues everytimes (as opposed to once). Similarly, bad connections aren't something I've had to contend with much recently. Maybe its infrastructure getting better, I can't say for sure, but it doesn't seem like as big an issue as in the past. Cross talk is an issue online. I find limiting the size of the game really helps with that. 3 players is my sweet spot (I'll often invite 4 so I have a bit of a buffer against missing players causing a canceled session). It's still not the same as gaming in person, but its significantly better than its been in the past (at least based on my experiances).

I have the exact opposite feelings from Stu about FFG's narrative dice system. I love it. It forces you to slow down and come up with story instead of "You hit, deal damage." Or "You miss, next." It takes some brain power, but the result is worth it. I think the talent tree system they have for classes will work wonderfully for L5R. You have the clan as the 'class' with each school being its own specialization tree. I can also see them doing something good with the honor system and other social systems (obligation or duty really match well to the setting).
As far as the wider property, I think FFG is an ideal home. Their card games are fantastic. Their board games are great (what if they gave us an X-wing type game with an L5R theme?). If you love L5R as a property, I think you should be happy that it is in such capable hands.

"F20" is the shorthand coined by Ken Hite and Robin Laws for all D20-ish Fantasy games.

Just to correct stork's assumption FFG did not buy AEG the company. They bought the L5R licence. And yes Stu is right, they bought it mostly for the card game, which always made FFG more money than they RPG. Even with the card game, they are not using the AEG mechanics, but making a new Living Card Game. Yes, like Stu Venable, I'm was worried by the announcement of GENESYS, their Generic System based on the SW dice mechanic. I fear that that a Rokugan setting will be shoehorned into that system. Not that I mind the dice mechanic in FFG Star Wars. I don't have a problem with thinking up bonus effects/ threats on the roll of the dice. But I think I HATE the character creation system in Star Wars. My boy was really enjoying GMing the starter set. But one evening with character generation put him off the game and he hasn't touched the core book in months.

Have you played in a weekly game online as opposed to one shots? I have. Well, every other week, at least. Probie Tim they did have black powder weapons during the renaissance Don't correct my factual inaccuracies when I'm making something up anus extractus style for example's sake.

Hee hee, I only mentioned it, because you'd worked do hard to correct yourself* talking about "medieval renaissance France" and to set up admonishing stork for saying "He's Dr Doom he doesn't take prisoners" I mean Dr Doom does nothing but take prisoners. If he just killed the Fantasic Four, rather than take them prisoner again and again, he'd have had a lot less trouble over the years. (Though actually there was such a thing as the "medieval Renaissance," in the twelfth century IIRC - so if you'd said nothing, you'd have gotten way with it)
