So 'yes-and' is more likely to be 'yes-but' when it comes to RPG's since consequences are always available.

I had to pop in to say that this was, for me, one of the best episodes in recent memory. (Not that there have necessarily been bad episodes, just that this one was particularly good). Clarifying the "Yes And" mindset for the uninitiated had me smiling and nodding my head in the car. Great stuff, guys.
When I recommend this podcast to new listeners I'll specifically suggest starting with episode 19-16 as a great example of why I love Happy Jack's.

While there wasn't much context for the Harsh vs Easy GM email, I thought Stu Venable's story about his fat bard in Bill's game perhaps had some options displaying these differences. The crit-fail DEX check could have just had the character fall prone and his sword go over the bridge edge vs the character falling to his death (yeah, it took 2 crit failures, but it happened). I'm not supporting one way or the other, I'm just wondering if something like this may have been more in line with what the emailer was experiencing?

Just to correct stork's assumption FFG did not buy AEG the company. They bought the L5R licence. And yes Stu is right, they bought it mostly for the card game, which always made FFG more money than they RPG. Even with the card game, they are not using the AEG mechanics, but making a new Living Card Game. Yes, like Stu Venable, I'm was worried by the announcement of GENESYS, their Generic System based on the SW dice mechanic. I fear that that a Rokugan setting will be shoehorned into that system. Not that I mind the dice mechanic in FFG Star Wars. I don't have a problem with thinking up bonus effects/ threats on the roll of the dice. But I think I HATE the character creation system in Star Wars. My boy was really enjoying GMing the starter set. But one evening with character generation put him off the game and he hasn't touched the core book in months. I'm one of the few that looks forward to narrative dice in Rokugan. Amusingly enough the SW character creation was already sort of like the L5R character creation with xp spendature. What I want an overhaul on is how crunchy character advancement got in the star wars system. Skills+career sheet+New careers+force? Too much encouragement for xp greed. Dice making problems happen on the fly? All on board.

Accidental character death. Seppuku is always an option (and nearly always lethal).

Which is basically heresy over on the FFG L5R forums 😂 I think it will be a very different kind of game with FFG dice mechanics, for one character death will be less likely. Being a long long time L5R player both of the old ccg and the rpg, I'm not sure how I'd feel about playing in an L5R game where death is less likely. Usually, at least once a campaign, and certainly once per new player, I've seen a samurai get one-shotted by a goblin thanks to exploding dice. We just had wrapped up an L5R campaign here I had managed to get a friend to run after all the Happyjacks L5R Actual Plays, I guess... I was really the only player with an inordinate amount of playing experience with the world. My first character died by session three, but he was an overly aggressive shungenja, it was bound to happen. The GM felt terrible but I explained that's how the world rolls here. Ended up with a Crane courtier, and really showed the other players how incredibly deadly they can be and/or useful. Now, that was aided by having a GM who was very Yes-And/Or/But and would go with things within reason. There were times, as I think they'd talked about on the podcast, where he was worried about me metagaming and put a kibosh on it, but he's a fair GM, he'd give me a shot at explaining why and how my character knew this with his appropriate skills. /ramble

I think this should be the next big shitstorm on this forum, the pro-soundboardians versus the anti-soundboardites.
