Its something that I hold near and dear to my heart and try desperately to do at every turn, and DT Pints brought it up in the RPG Survey thread... so uh how about that for a topic?

What about it? Are you asking for ways to do it? whether we try to evangelize it ourselves? Whether we have a responsibility to grow it? Does it need ambassadors? what about it do you want to discuss?

Hence why it would be a show topic...

Someone call ? This is pretty near and dear to me also...it's basically an impression I get when run beginner box games for pathfinder at the local bookstore. I get the inpression thst the RPG hobby is a greying one. As someone who's life has been greatly improved by discovering it, I'd like to make sure it remains prevalent in our culture and doesn't go the way of model railroading (something my 65 year old father and his cronies obsess and have flame wars over...don't get him started on The Great Debate of HO vs Lionel...).
So called nerd culture has become so much more mainstream it would be nice to see "all ships lifted up on the same tide".
Speaking of ships I gotta go catch mine...

I find blood and bone fertiliser is excellent for promoting growth, provided you can keep the wildlife (domestic or native) away from it . . . Aaron

Seriously though the big competitor with mainstreaming tabletop RPG's with the "rising tide if nerd/geek culture" remains the silicon chip. CRPG's and MMORPG's have invested big big bucks in claiming and retaining that portion of the nerd population that enjoys RPG's . . . It's also very good at stifling both the debate and the contrasting of the very substantial differences between tabletop and digital games. If you want to grow the hobby destroy Sony . . . Aaron

Hence why it would be a show topic... It's possible, not saying it definitely happened, but possible, that I replied without reading the board title.

Aaron I think PC and Console gamers are the easiest people to convert. As soon as they complain about something or if I get the slightest whiff of interest, I run with it. Alcohol helps in that situation. It's kinda the same way that you convince a chick to... uh... "go out to dinner with you." Yep. I'd be interested in hearing how people convince "normies" to join in the fun, though. I think some of my fashion industry co-workers would enjoy roleplaying, metal-head friends, or even my parents who aren't otherwise into nerdy culture, but I have no idea how to bring it up without getting "the look" that means they aren't going to sit with me at lunch anymore. I hear all these stories about people with carpenters, jocks, and lawyers in their games. How is that done?

I hear all these stories about people with carpenters, jocks, and lawyers in their games. How is that done? I don't have the answer on how to get normal people to play as I've never successfully made a convert. That said, broaching the topic is easy. Just bring it up next time some one asks you what you're doing over the weekend. Or if a conversation drifts anywhere near a genre you play a game in mention something about it. I talk about the fact that I play whenever I get the chance. Sure sometimes people might react like, wow, that's weird, dorky, or for kids. Or even give you the dreaded, that's evil(I got that from a co-worker once) and that's just an opportunity to educate them about how fun games are. I think the best form of evangelizing you can do is show your enthusiasm for games and how much you love them. The worst thing that will happen is people will become more aware of the hobby and you may pique their interest. As introductions just offer to run a game sometime. I think Fiasco works best for anyone with a bit of acting or theater experience. It's really just a long form improv game, something most actors have done once or twice. A WOW geek, 4e or pathfinder. Engineering geeks, Eclipse Phase, GURPS, Traveller, FASA Star Trek, any crunchy system that lets them play a sci-fi game. For the fashion/Metal head, Maybe NWOD or Dresden files, if they like the urban fantasy-goth type scene. Apocalypse world or Inspectres are great for starting people as well. The important part is to make the game about something they relate to. I read a great article on wizards a few years ago about a girl who ran a game for her non gamer friends. She realized quite early that they weren't interested in gnolls and magic swords. But they did love shoes and hated the Kardashian's. So she reskined her adventure so that the enemies where Kim, Chloe, and ...K-something, and the reward at the end was Manolo Blahniks. It was done in D&D 4e but she made sure to match the game to the players and that's the most important part. I think a more relationship heavy game would have been better, something like Smallville, but she made it work. Getting them to accept your invitation is a whole nother issue. I think the best you can do is just put the offer out there and continue to talk about how much fun it is. Don't hound them, but give them the offer and then just wait for them to accept it, which may never come. For people who don't even know what an RPG is, FTB release multi-track recording for introducing new people to the hobby. www.feartheboot.com/ftb/?s=%22episode+115%2C+chapter%22

My daughter Heather grabs her dice anytime my mat comes out to play. Grab them when they are young! Ya know...'in essence' I agree with you. But from a guy whose cleric heals people with "Sexual Healing" (Marvin Gaye) playing in the background..."Grab them when they are young..." makes me question some wording choices. But yes, if you can at least tolerate the little goblins we call human children I highly recommend running some games for them. If at the least they will remind you of how awesome it is to really not 'let the character sheets keep you back..." Case in point: Ran a Beginner Box Pathfinder game (This Shiny Paizo release is in my opinion the best product out to get new folks especially kids into RPGs) One of the 14 year old players decided to defeat the dragon by feeding it goblins until it was too full to move. And that lead to the Legend of Black Fang the Big Butted Dragon... Cheers, Curt.

I really think IF the hobby grows thats great - but there aint much I can do for that, it is largely down to game companies and how effective they are at producing games worth playing and getting them out there.
I care, it just isn't my job.
