Great show! Awesome job Kimi, Gina & Sam. Thanks, Stu for creating a place for the female RPGamer's voice to be heard...especially such articulate and insightful ones...there's a reason HJRP ranks highest the the higher-estrogenated set. I hope you create an opportunity for more such episodes! The only thing that disappointed me was that I did not know Kimi was going to be at Geek Girl Con...I would have loved to have met you in person and bought you a beer or margarita. Hopefully next year...bring Gina & Sam next time - we'll get an all-chica one-shot going with some of the Lady Monster-Slayers. Cheers, sam

Thanks for the great show! Lots of great insights; I was having some connection issues, so I was only able to listen and not comment live.
I really appreciated the talk of being aware of sensitive issues while gaming. I particularly like the concept of a quick non-verbal "tone-it-back/don't-go-there cue, especially for gaming with new folks. I often find myself conflicted with the ease of talking about in-game violence generally, but combat is such a major part of most rule systems and games in general that it sets a tone of acceptance that can have the potential to escalate and go into dangerous areas. Our long-tern gaming group (going back to the early 80's, and, yes, all-male except for a very few games with spouses) has always had any atrocities only being alluded-to-background for the most part, and never elaborated on horrific details. That said, even casual mention of a Certain Topic can trigger a serious response in any particular person.
Thanks again for a really good blend of fun and serious topics.

Cause they called it 'Ladies Night' . . . and that's what Those Nights ^ are called. Besides, my pants were off already. Mmmm . . . you really don't get the conceptual difference between ladies night tackle revelation (ie humiliation of the male to please the female) and subscribing to the raincoat brigade (ie getting your tackle out to pleasure yourself) . . . Not that I'm criticising, I too have worn the occasional raincoat, but there is a difference . . . Aaron

We here in america have what is apparently called the Gooky Cookie which you might have already guessed is a yank wank version of the soggie sao. So enjoy the great world wide connections we all share. Ah one online global family! Playing "games' together.

I guess it should be comforting that it inspired about as deep reflection - no more, no less - as is usual.
Seriously, this was the first episode that my wife joined me to listen in, it was great.(she normally wouldn't be bothered)

Before I start, I want to say that I'm right there with you three on the "hur hur, Ya wan' me to hold her down? hur hur" being out of line.
And if someone at the table is uncomfortable, over anything, for whatever reason, it needs to end, certainly.
But I disagree that there are any intrinsically taboo subjects.

Yes. This ^^ was the most shocking exchange for me too. Cards on the table, rape has featured in some games I've played. There was an early Traveller I played at school wherein I played a female mechanic (I think on Azhanti High Lightning) who was raped with a pistol and killed by other players. I'll admit I took it in reasonable humour, played out the scene in a way it wouldn't do now, and rolled up another character. But in our defence (and in reality - no defence) we were all boys, at an all boy school so most us had hardly spoken to girls, and all puerile 14 year olds who had no experience of life.
Later on, in the early days of our Pendragon campaign (which we played like Game of Thrones before George Martin ever put pen to paper) there may have been some "not taking no for an answer" with NPC serving girls. I'm not proud of it and I wouldn't do it now.
But the point is, I wouldn't have done it then either, if there had been a girl at a table. I can't believe anybody could be so crass as to talk like that in front of a real, live, woman. Even if she was playing a guy.
But what shocked me even more about Gina's (?) story was the in-game acceptance of the of the offer. Were her fellow players grown up? I'm pretty sure that in character, if I'd been playing the CO, I'd have punched the character making the offer to "hold her down." What worried me even more than playing such a horrible character in front of a woman is the implied acceptance that this is what professional soldiers do.
And yes, we do hear of horrible abuses by our armed forces, sometimes committed upon comrades in arms. But we shouldn't accept them. And in-game is somewhere where if necessary, we SHOULD be able to say "THAT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE SOLDIER!" As well as, out of character saying "Dude, Really? In front of Gina?"

fredrix The only point of disagreement I would have is that it isn't acceptable regardless of who's at the table. Even if there are no ladies at the table the sort of behavior that Gina witnessed is not acceptable. Period, end of story. JiB

Rape almost came up in a game of mine a few years ago. It was Dresden Files, and the PCs were battling White Court Vampires (who are pretty much serial rapists/murderers to begin with), and a gay character had been spattered with White Court Vampire blood which is an aphrodisiac. I had pointed out that the male vampire they were fighting had a GAPING CHEST WOUND, and it was looking tempting to the demigod hero. Another player insisted that there not be any form of rape in the scene, so that did not happen. I figured that it would have been a sort of twisted poetic justice, but that's okay. In all, that session was probably the best one in the very successful campaign.
