D.T. Pints and Houndin, not sure if the OP page lets you ask to join, but if not - message me your email addy and I will invite you. I'm hoping we can get some character concepts decided before the session. Like most generic systems, it's very helpful to know what you want before you start building it.

How prevalent are the other humanoids? Do you see them as a minority ? Do certain countries have more ? Less ? I'm thinking about perhaps a Russian dwarf dirigible engineer? Vitus Kiska Kalashnikov.

Dwarves are the only race that still have their own civilization intact (underground in ze mountains). And yes, they are known for engineering as you might expect All the other races are presumed to have been mostly genocided / bred out in the last few hundred years. As a result most half-cast humans are a throw-back of some sort, their great grandfather was an orc or some such and they just drew the genetic straw (short or not). People talk about this noble or that noble being pure-blood elf but it's largely faff. Edit: By "Noble" I mean any person born with high status Like landed gentry.

I like the idea of GURPS character gen for noobs. It will be a nice recording of four people not knowing what they are doing. I have the core book and as it happens the GURPS steampunk...but I have never really played more than a few sessions. It will be nice to create characters as a group to figure it out and possibly to build some connected characters as well.
Here's another left of field question...what about religion ? The russian explorers left their mark all over Alaska with various names...Sitka, Kiska, Pribilof Islands. And also the remains of old russian orthodox churches...I'd like to borrow a bit of that "unusual to those not familiar" i.e. weird religion for some of the characters traits. Or would religion fall away with the advent of so much SCIENCE! Similarly to what has occurred in late 20th-21st century RW ?
Has most of the RW earth timeline remained intact ? Does the United States exist ? Or are they still a colonial wasteland of a despotic empire...err I mean the UNITED kingdom ?
Genocide ? Yikes! What happened there ?

The vast majority of the real world timeline is intact. And all the RW religions exist. If someone is a true believer it probably qualifies as a disadvantage (with a point value commensurate with how strict / restrictive it is). The main differences are: Rapid expansion and progress with the steam tech. A bit of 'alternate history' to do with the races. But it is ANCIENT history. About 10,000 years ago. The world knows about as much about them as we know about the Egyptian Pharoh's. Which is a fair bit for those who have studied the subject but very little beyond the most popular stories for most people. UPDATE: The Obsidian Portal has been updated with a bunch of stuff relating to the questions being asked. Also, if you haven't already, join the page as a player! This allows you to post on the in-game forum. of-steamworks-and-magick-obscura.obsidianportal.com/wikis/main-page

Yeah I figured out how to becomes a fan but didn't find the player button. I'll try again on my lunch break. Also I'm thinking of going the detective route. More on that later as well.

I have posted my idea for character concept in the OP forum. Lemme know your thoughts. It sound good Remember that while it is 100 points, there is a potential extra 50 from disads. GURPS language is a bit funny like that. You can also apply limitations to advantages like medium to make them cheaper. Now that's two strangers from foreign lands D.T. Pints - you could definitely be from Russian-Alaska, the purchase happened in 1867, but Dwarves live a long time. You could be anywhere between 80 (just come of age) and 300 (Middle aged) years old.
