I'm thinking about doing a short series, on a different RSS feed, about DnD5e. Probably not a long running show, and I'll cross post them on the happy jacks feed, along with the actual play.
I have been reading the PHB in earnest. I made a dwarf cleric on Sunday (Baldrick Windydrawers, former brewer, current cleric "sacramental wine is for pansies").
Simplified rules, I like that. Not a lot of at-the-table calculations. Most of the fiddly rules bits are the players' responsibility. I like that.

I've read the basic PDF. I wasn't that keen initially, but the advantage/disadvantage mechanic piqued my interest, and I appreciate the nostalgic feel. I'm looking forward to trying it out as a player. Less stress!

I'm joining a gaming group next Thursday for 5e Chargen (I'm actually playing in this game!), so thought I'd price up a Players Handbook. Amazon.co.uk has one for £26.95 ($43.43) with free delivery. Amazon.com has one at $29.99 (£18.60). I don't even want to look at shipping from the US (as I'm sure it will be extortionate), but the price difference seems a bit odd. Any overseas Jackers seen different prices in their country? Items: $29.95 Shipping & handling: $7.98 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Total before tax: $37.93 Estimated tax to be collected: $0.00 Total: $37.93 Postage is usually close to 25% of the total order cost. Amazon. Anywhere else is just.... I also shop on eBay. Forget the Global Shipping Program (because that's just a hidden commission and stupid if you pay it) but actual postage cost can be much higher - and it would be for this oversized hardcover - even with the letter/small package rate. This is my experience in Central Europe. Hope you find it useful.

Ah don't worry about the Hit Points, he'll have at least 60 in a few LEVELS! (cue sad trombone) *tap dances with Kainguru offstage right* [Thus concludes scene one in the smash off-off-off-off Broadway show "I'm Just Mad About Gary!"]

I can see why there aren't the PDFs. There was quite the brisk trade of PDF rule books in early 4E, same day uploads. It's how I previewed the system before going out and buying dead tree versions.

The trick is though that not selling the PDFs doesn't stop piracy. It only "forces" those that want the PDF to go to an illegitimate channel to get it.
Just like the argument that piracy accounts for lost revenue is a red herring. It's not. The serious pirates aren't paying for your product one way or the other. If they can't pirate it, they go without. So you were never going to see that money.
And on the flip side, just look at your own situation. Would you have bought some of those systems without the chance to look it over before hand? So, in your case, it actually lead to extra revenue coming in for the company.

Well, the Player's Handbook is already up on a very common torrent site (I just checked). So their refusal to make a pdf available did exactly nothing to avoid illegal online distribution, and people who want to buy a pdf legitimately can't.
Can't see where it's a smart move. Not at all.

They can certainly make that decision. But I don't know if I respect it, 'cause generally it doesn't accomplish what they think it will.
For a small company, it might. Obscurity is in a way its own form of copy protection.
But for WotC? No way. I'd bet the PHB was being torrented HOURS after it was released. As fast as someone can scan it. Or someone in-house or at the printers copied off the pdf and off it goes.
I guess if they're doing to because they don't want to accommodate paying customers who'd prefer a pdf over a book, then yes, it's a sound decision.
But if they think they're going to control their content and stop piracy, they're simply wrong. The world doesn't work that way anymore.

I own the dead tree edition of the PHB - preordered on Amazon . . . but for the week I waited I still had a 'copy' to read courtesy of the darknets . . . Aaron

I certainly don't agree with it, Stu... But, they have every right to make that bad decision. Plus, it's possible that they are just giving the stores some lead time. That's what AEG does. Dead Tree comes out first, and PDF follows much later to give the stores a chance to sell them. Or it could be a condition of the license with Trapdoor for Dungeonscape.

I would not be surprised if they wait until the basic three books (PHB, DMG & MM) are out and selling before they go digital. I also suspect they will sell it exclusively through their own portal and not through Amazon or DTRPG perhaps with a subscription model even.

Yeah, DungeonScape has posted that they will supply digital access to the Core books: Aaron
