Oh, here's something that I think is important for the majority of PbtA games. Ideal group size: ~6 players. Granted, this varies on which game you are playing, but MonsterHearts with 4 players or less, can be very difficult, as in, drama can be difficult to get going. 4 players is also Pretty small with World Wide Wrestling. I'll fight you on that joecrak. I refuse to run PbtA games with more than 4 players.

Now, given I'm not versed in some of these, so I can see how some might require those dynamics, but 4 player Dungeon World is just perfect. I've had very great 3 player sessions to, and 5 just barely starts to stretch it.

Seriously though, You're missing out on so much sweet sweet drama on MonsterHearts with only 4 players. Getting all the players to profess their love and hatred of one another is so much tastier when there is more. It's also much easier to set the characters up against one another when there are more options. One game I was in ended with the Mortal and his Vampire lover, and their other fling the Fae, fighting the Chosen, and the werewolf (who was also in love with the mortal), while the Infernal was stuck in the middle, crushing on the Fae. World Wide Wrestling, the fueds get pretty boring pretty quickly with only 4, My ideal for that is 6-7 players. Granted, a great work around is using an advancement to play a second character Dungeon World works fine for 4 players, as the intent of the game is very different. The group is supposed to work together, as opposed to against one another.

I totally get that in a PvP, character-driven game like Monsterhearts, more characters means more interactions and more drama. I find more than four players hard to juggle, though. Also, as the characters don't really have to stay together, more characters means more people to share the spotlight, meaning they all get it less frequently. Four players is the sweet spot for me.

Clearly you've never played HERO. I have not. Though I think I saw the books on jazzisblues shelf. They were the ones with the metal braces under them, right? Seriously though, isn't HERO mostly rules for how to create things, rather than rules to play? The two "Big Blue Books" are indeed monsters. Actually Volume 1 is Character Creation and Volume 2 is Combat and Adventuring so that second one really contains the rules to play. There's a much smaller basic book as well as numerous settings like Champions (supers), Star Hero, Fantasy Hero, Monster Hunters International and more. It is SUPER crunchy but a very complete game system. Some folks like JiB take to it like a duck to water while others (like myself) find it damned intimidating.

Yeah, SUPER crunchy doesn't do it for me any more. New World of Darkness and Ubiquity are about as crunchy as I can stand, which it why I'm a hippie gamer. I don't want to spend lots of time dealing with the rules (both learning them and using them during play) I just want to get on and play the damn game.
Given enough time anyone can become familiar enough with any system to run it smoothly, but I prefer games that are fairly simple to begin with. That way everyone gets to the point where they aren't constantly referencing rules that much faster. I feel that Fate, Cortex Plus, PbtA, and yes, even Savage Worlds do that fairly well.

Heck, knowing how much you guys enjoyed playing L5R, I can point you towards a great hack of it for this system. It will be much easier to remember the rules than it would be to play regular L5R. I, for one, would like to be pointed toward this game. I am very much in love with both the L5R mechanics AND setting, so I would like to see the same setting handled by different mechanics for comparison. A long-term goal of mine would be to do a similar comparison between Vampire: the Masquerade (20th Anniversary) and what I can put together in GURPS using their two sourcebooks from the 3rd edition days. I will admit it's not a great scenario because I haven't had a chance to play Vampire yet, and I have no hope of ever becoming as familiar with the setting as pretty much everyone else on the internet who has actually played it with any regularity. I feel that many of the Vampire aficionados consider its time to have come and gone. Who knows, maybe Vampire will spark the next wave of "OSR" ;-)

I have player, and I like V:tR (and the nre Gor-Machine Chronicles updates) very much yeknom. But I really don't need to see an explosion of practically identical games based on it put out by everyone and their mother.

Hey Probie Tim, you should follow sbloyd's advice and totally run Tunnels and Trolls in Savage Worlds.
