As far as PbtA games go, I haven't been interested, really. Until I read about Masks. That... interests me. Got a link? My only real experience with PbtA is Tremulus and I liked it fine. Been thinking it's time to do some digging.

As far as PbtA games go, I haven't been interested, really. Until I read about Masks. That... interests me. None of the other games grabbed your interest? Just a setting thing, or were you turned off by the system? TBH? Lack of concrete contact with PbtA games, really. I kind of dismissed them out of hand - not as some kind of faux "hippie games are bad" thing, just hadn't had my interest piqued. But, I was reading rpg.net and saw a thread on it; the explaination of the game did engage my interest. From there? Who knows. As far as PbtA games go, I haven't been interested, really. Until I read about Masks. That... interests me. Got a link? My only real experience with PbtA is Tremulus and I liked it fine. Been thinking it's time to do some digging. www.kickstarter.com/projects/1277034820/masks-a-new-generationAnd here's the link discussing it on rpg.net: forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?766955-Kickstarter-Masks-A-New-Generation-Superheroes-powered-by-the-ApocalypseI don't have funds to kick with (and rarely do), nor time to actually play. But the description of how the game works as laid out in the rpg.net thread points to this being a "PDF purchase to read, but probably never play" for me.

]Really? I quite like Monster of the Week. It took a conversation with the author to wrap my head around one or two of the moves, but it's one of my favorite PbtA games. What don't you like? Funnily enough, I didn't like Monster of the Week the one time I tried it. The MC was far too soft on us when we rolled misses. Plus, it lacked the drama that I loved from MonsterHearts I'm having trouble with World Wide Wrestling too. I am just not familiar with professional wrestling enough to know what the moves are doing of how things are structured. To be honest, I always thought pro wrestling was pretty dumb. But reading the essays in the book gave me some appreciation and understanding of the skill that goes into not actually hurting your opponent, since both of you need to keep working. I'll need to watch some wrestling before I fully grok what's going on though. I hear this a bunch, and I understand it. Though, I've seen plenty of people who have never watched one episode take to this game like flies to honey. Like all games, a great table goes a long way. If any player is playing to win, they don't understand the actual intent of the game, and that is more to put on a good show, than to win all of your matches. Though the selfish character type is totally a thing that exists in actual Wrestling. *cough*Hogan*Cough*

I know very little of wrestling, always having had that "look down your nose at the ignorant people who like rasslin'" attitude. Not so much anymore, but never had any interest. Now that I've started looking at PbtA games, I can see how it would translate.

The key to it is to remember you're not playing fictional characters engaged in a pre-determined athletic event. You're playing people making a living at being pro-wrestlers, getting the crowd to love/hate you, and putting butts in seats.

Man, I am super tempted to back Masks just so I can take a look at the pre-publication materials. My wife would kill me.

Been thinking it's time to do some digging. Glad to hear you liked tremulus, jimto. I've seen other people say similar things, but overall I was very VERY disappointed with that game. I don't feel it is a good example of what PbtA games are. One of the few kickstarters that I regret backing. The wife's away this weekend, so I'll try to watch some wrestling. I need to consume some media so I know what the WWWRPG is trying to do. There's a whole puro rasu (pro wrestling) subculture here in Japan that I should check out.

I wonder how well a PbtA game would work in a PbP format...?

I wonder how well a PbtA game would work in a PbP format...? According to my friend, it works very well. HyveMynd Japanese wrestling can be very different from mainstream American wrestling. But I would love to hear first hand reports! A quick search of youtube can give you all sorts of examples of whatever you are looking for. One of the best things to come out of Pro Wrestling, in my opinion, is the promos. People that can talk a good talk, are amazing, Muhammad Ali has been quoted saying that he learned how to smack talk from watching wrestling. And he's so mean he makes medicine sick. I also frequently post videos on my g+ thread for another friend that has never watched, but loves the game, if you want, I can tag you some time.

Maybe Masks, since sbloyd is interested. My Japanese isn't to the point where I could go and watch a puro rasu match (despite being here for 10 years), but that is (now) one of my goals. Feel free to tag me into one of those G+ posts joecrak.

Does anyone actually play Apocalypse World itself? Is there something about the licence that is encouraging the proliferation of derivatives? It seems like it's getting pretty saturated to me..... Lots of kickstarters for "new" games turning out to be PbtA. HyveMynd 's comment about Spirit of '77 would seem to confirm this...
