The writing style is what made me give up on Apocalypse World. When it comes to game mechanics, that shit should be dry, like a technical manual. Yeah, I never made it through because I was so annoyed by the tone. The only time I like that sort of writing in my rules is parody games, like Human Occupied Landfill or White Wolfs "Dudes of Legend."

I liked the mix of tone and dry in Dresden.

This is very true. You HAVE to play to the genre. You must make purposefully bad choices (like a teenager would) and sew as much drama as possible. Given the option between cleanly resolving something and throwing your character into a pit of emotional train wreck, the best choice is always the latter. Everything needs to be irrationally emotionally driven and the goal isn't to get out of trouble, it's to make sure you just keep your head above water, but still kind of drown a little. This style of self flagellating game play is not for everyone. I'd say the game forces you to play that way. The outcome of many moves don't solve problems, they just kind of delay them or shift them elsewhere. And that's when you get the best result on a 10+. With 7-9 and 6- results, you very often end up creating more drama. That is by design, which I why I feel Monsterhearts is one of the best examples of how mechanics can support and enforce a specific genre, but I know some people won't want that. Playing a selfless, heroic character means you're fighting against what the system is trying to do, and you probably will not enjoy yourself.

I would make a snarky **CENSORED** comment here, but I'm too brain fried tonight.

Playing a selfless, heroic character means you're fighting against what the system is trying to do, and you probably will not enjoy yourself. That's not even to mention that many of those mechanics only give you control over your lack of control (like picking a response to someone's use of a Turn Someone On move against you, where you don't get a say in if it turns your character on, only in how you deal with it and what kind of power you give up). Many players I know would not be ok with that. Many others would embrace the RP that moment creates and the outcomes of either a narrative promise or the ramifications of giving over that string. But in my opinion, it's a mechanic that perfectly adds to the emotional runaway bus that is each of the characters lives - you aren't stopping it, but maybe you can choose what you crash into...

Basically it was about a DM who ran 1st Ed AD&D exclusively and felt like the players shouldn't know the rules, as that would break immersion. That the GM should be the only lens through which the system interacted with the game at hand.

I would contribute my opinion and references to my own GM experiences, but that seems dangerous given the thread's history. Can anyone explain why it grew to be 28 pages?

And as we all know, that's not really roleplaying. don't, just don't. I hate to agree here, but it's a bad idea to summon what you can't kill.

Thanks for the mini info Jib. I'll take a look at Reaper. Reaper has a great miniature finder application on their website. You can search for "elf bard" and it will come up with a number of choices for you. Reaper is generally my goto. They have great pewter minis and if you're on a budget, their Bones plastic lines is growing by leaps and bounds. While they don't have the same detail as their pewter equivalent, I've found that they paint very well. Go with their Bones line if you're trying to beef up that Horde you want to throw at the party. They have almost as many critters as they do player character miniatures. Also there are other sites such as coolminiornot.com and fantization.com that have a good selection. These other sites can be more pricey sometimes, but are great when you have to find a specific miniature. For instance coolminiornot.com saved my bacon when one of my players wanted to play a kitsune character in an asian fantasy campaign.

I was thinking of doing a PbtA game based on a strike team that get their abilities from super powered Sketchers. I wonder if hoseirrob would playtest it.
