Seriously?! WTF is wrong with you. She has a bunch of friends who eat nothing but Italian. She likes Italian but also loves Thai. She's thinking of enjoying Italian with her current group, and scratching her itch for Thai with other friends. That is SO fucking far from excusing domestic abuse that it's pretty fucking disgusting that you even brought it up. Way to go, trivializing a real and fucking serious problem. I thought for a while about how to respond to this, and there is really only one thing for me to do; apologize. You're absolutely right. Although it was not my intention, I did trivialize a real problem with my analogy and I'm sorry. You were right to call me out on this ayslyn.

It takes a lot of character to realize you've crossed a line and apologize for it. Some lunatic popping off, not withstanding... ^.^

Now, that... was some classy shit. An exchange like that on the internet is like catching Bigfoot riding a Unicorn. Well played.

Pointing out those things is the only way to get them to change. But I would be a horrible hypocrite if that didn't also apply to me. Getting slightly back on track, the posts I've seen from ilina made me think she wasn't really happy in her current group, and that they didn't treat her very well. If that is the case, I would encourage you to leave, ilina. I doubt your group will change to the more narrative and character-driven style of game you seem to want. There is no point in staying with a group when you aren't having fun.

My take away was more that she wasn't getting everything she wanted out of the one group, but was enjoying it for what it was... Now, if Hyve is right, Il.... Follow his advice. Run for the hills. But if you are happy with the one group, and just looking for a little extra on the side, then your second group plan sounds pretty good.

i was merely trying to quench an extra desire on the side that i can't quench in my primary group. i might insult it at times, but i enjoy it. i just like other stuff too. the Italian and Thai analogy said it best.
i enjoy Italian, Thai, Greek and Chinese
i want to get my fix for Italian with my main group, my Taste for Thai with a second, a Taste of Greek with a third, and a Taste of Chinese with a fourth.

Well then, I got completely the wrong impression from your posts ilina. If you're enjoying eating Italian with your group, that's great. But based on how you've presented them, they don't seem to be interested in trying anything other than Italian. As you said, you'll have to go elsewhere if you want to eat something else.

i am looking for different groups to try different flavors with. as the group taught me, criticizing it is how you show love and help it. it doesn't always help, but it has helped a few times before.

Ok, so you have a character type. A good portion of players do. Nothing wrong with that intrinsically. Where I think you go wrong is trying to use largely superficial factors to seperate your concepts. Often race (actually species) falls into the background anyways. Unless you heavily focus on maintaining that race's identity it will wash away at the edges. So, knowing that race will drop away, it's not worth picking one that doesn't fit. Instead you could play a normal elf that perhaps comes from a disgraced or tainted tribe. One must exist, and it plays a similar role to blood elf without coming with the same baggage. So the character might look like this...
Dottie the Elf was from a tribe of Elves that turned to infernalism, making pacts with demons at the highest cost. The elves would not abide their existence and destroyed all tribe members old enough to speak or read. Dottie was but a babe, but the elves could not stand the thought of her as one of their own. Thus it was that Dottie became an orphan living out of a stor wind orphanage... Blah blah blah. This writing is awful, but shows how a similar story can be concocted without triggering a knee jerk reaction. It's easy enough to create an outsider without crossing the line into enemy.

"...i mean, it is fine to say no to the player that wants to play an ogre to make their fighter stronger, but what about the player who used a race that while common in the world, isn't native to your home region, or a member of said race with an exotic skillset? like an Elven Engineer or a halfling Paladin?" why is it fine to tell a player they can't plan an ogre for ostensibly balance reasons but then be permissive of another race/class choice that you are assuming is only in there for fluff reasons? This seems like a big assumption. For example in my game being able to relate to, speak to, infiltrate into a community of elves while also having the power of a shaman class is way more of a push on the balance beam than just having a fighter that is stronger and taller than it would otherwise be... I mean the ogre is also gaining disadvantages of real or perceived limited intelligence, the disadvantage of not being able to move through small doors or even enter a secret passage escape from the dungeon.... My biggest concern with someone who dips a finger into 3 or 4 areas of the fluff is that you get so far away from the trope of a fantasy RPG that its only a good idea if everyone is doing it and or on board with it. Or maybe for a really small group. Because 95% of players interaction with a race or culture is from a fellow PC. So their concept of shamanism, elfism, etc etc will be derived from their experience with this PC. It also makes it really hard to fit another player in the group when all the distinctive real estate is taken. Lets say you get a new player next week and they REALLY want to play a tauren... honestly that space is spoken for... or what if they want to play the vixen hotty elf with magic... space is already taken. This also goes for NPCs you'd want to add along the way or mysteries you'd want to introduce. This type of thing is better experienced AS PART OF THE GAME.

I'd likely ban the character for being an orphan I've met too many "I have no family" types in my 36 or whatever years of roleplaying. Hrm...I always seem to run into characters that are straight out of The Outlaw Josey Wales. wow, big surprise that players want to adopt the two most common backgrounds in all of heroic story telling? the gall of them... [I'm being sarcastic ]
