21 seasons some 400 episodes of content? There’s gonna be some redundancy. As far as finding the funny... yojimbohawkins you’ve been here since the beginning you were here for the Dark Days of “Lenny the Bruce” also just known as Bruce...😄 that was some dead horse joke beating. I really suggest you give the new hosts a chance, yes they are younger typically but they are also the future of the hobby and what they have to say generally makes me optimistic. If I were Stu Venable and devoted so much love and energy to this magnificent bastard of a podcast I’d like to see it grow and explore new territory as well. That takes new blood. We can’t keep playing Stormbringer forever stork ! But the mute disad? Kimi called him on it after he wore the 20th stick of chalk to a nub...but if I were GM? The talkiest player wants to take mute?!? Shenanigans. But again that episode five of new L5R? That’s a gaming session of gold!

I'm not being deliberately harsh or nasty, and I don't expect the show to change its' format just to please me; I'm just relating my experience of losing interest in HJ. As for giving it another chance, I just don't care enough to make time for it. My own issue is that once I've noticed something, I can't not see it. I had to stop listening to Campaign because I noticed the way Kat shut down anything the players did that would derail her story; I couldn't not notice that going forward and it spoiled it for me, although to be fair I blame the dreadful Never Tell Me The Pods for bringing that to my attention.

Understood. I’ve just always been someone that loves to see things I love grow and build. I miss your emails sir. It may just be we cannot have old crusty retired British army officers and red Mohawked weirdos share the same space...
I hope and wish it to be different.
For the record my father is a crusty retired marine and veteran of the Vietnam war and I am a long haired, gun toting, retired Bering sea crab fisherman sea captain. I would like to have room in my life and RPG hobby for all to sit at the table and game...and get in an argument about armor class 😄

I try to bring out my Dylan (not the hippy folk singer) whenever possible...
Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height, Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

I’ve always felt ‘bluff old cove’ is far more appropriate. As for red mohawks, that’s just jealousy. I bade a sad farewell to trips to a gentleman’s barber a long time ago. In regard to DT’s poem (I see what you did there), I have absolutely no intention of growing old gracefully; I just have to hang on long enough before I have to regroup! More seriously, I have no issues with HJ’s changing and evolving as the creators see fit; every good thing and all that. I’m just not bothered either way.

Hosts & Guests.I don't really know the new hosts that are now involved, so I can't speak to them, but my interest in the show began to wane when you started lionizing the Angry GM. I heard a number of podcasts talk about what a great guy he is (and to be fair, in person he probably is), but I just can't see how denegrating and patronising someone who asks for advice is constructive or useful (and Angry is very condescending). The only host who called him on his bullshit was Tim. Because of that, I lost a bit of respect for everyone who was present for those shows (except for Tim). I'm sure none of you will lose any sleep over that, but it was definitely a contributing factor to my gradual loss of interest in Happy Jacks. I listened to the episode in which Tappy made his return, but other than that, I'm not really interested any more. I gotta say, I think Tim was the douchebag there. Everyone knows what his shtick is. You don't invite a guy on as a guest and berate him for his style. That's an ambush unless previously discussed. You don't get people to agree to come on your show when your M.O. is ambushing them.

Ambushing? I didn’t see that at all, but then I feel that Angry’s schtick is largely pointless. For me, inviting someone on the show who berates a listener who writes in for advice and calls them a dipshit is a good way to drive listeners away. But each to their own.

I gotta say, I think Tim was the douchebag there. Of course you did. Everyone knows what his shtick is. In my defense? Before that episode? I didn't know what his shtick was. I don't read a lot of non-OSR gaming blogs or Twitter feeds (and hell, lately, I haven't even been reading those) and I had never heard of the Angry GM prior to that episode. Now, I know.

I don't recall the episode specifically, but without knowing the second half of your post above, I would have happily agreed with Steven. AngryGM has a specific shtick. It's remarkably well known from anyone who knows him. It may not be to everyone's tastes, and that's legit, but inviting them onto a show, just to berate them on it would be a douchebag move. It would be like tearing into Don Rickles for being insulting.

inviting them onto a show, just to berate them on it would be a douchebag move. Were that the case, I'd agree. But he wasn't brought on to the show just to be berated, and I didn't know his shtick at that time. That said? It's a shitty shtick to be a dick just for the sake of being a dick. If we're ever on the show together again, and he started being a dick just for the sake of being a dick because it's his shtick, I'm probably going to call him on it. That that said? As fredrix posted above, we're veering way off topic. I'm more than happy to continue this conversation in another thread, but we should probably let this one get back on topic.

I subscribe and listen to over 20 RPG podcasts through iTunes for many years. They are all the talk show type, not actual play, and most are not weekly shows. Happy Jacks is in my opinion the best general RPG podcast and the best overall RPG podcast (the ENnies are wrong!). The show is not married to one system, and it has large number of rotating hosts with different favorite systems giving Happy Jacks a unique resource strongly suited to covering a variety of gaming topics. All the hosts come across as doing the show for the love of gaming.
Most other shows focus on one system, which is fine for shows and listeners that want to do deep dives into a particular rule system.
Some other shows come across as vehicles to sell product which weakens their show, and some other shows come across as elitists in their opinions and talk down to their audience. Happy Jacks does none of this, and the hosts often disagree with each other. Those discussions are usually the most informative.
Happy Jacks has just about the most consistent technical quality.
Out of all the RPG podcasts that I download Happy Jacks is one of three that when I see the download, I convince myself that is a good time to listen to a podcast. By the way, the other shows are "Gaming and BS" and "The Order 66 Podcast". One is a weekly general show, and one is a system specific monthly show.
I keep hearing that D&D sales are booming with big help from Matt Mercer and his crew. While Matt's show could draw actual play listeners from Happy Jacks actual play, I cannot offer any reason for drops in Happy Jacks' main show. Maybe there is always a waxing and waning in any show audience, and it could be that Happy Jacks is not getting the new listeners due to competition from shows with brand recognition?

Suggestion for future episodes containing guest hosts: Brief everyone on who they are before doing the show.

I liked the Angry GM episode because it brought out some conflict, some episodes of the podcast is a bit boring since "all" hosts have the same opinions.
It might be one reason for the drop in listeners we already know what "the correct way to play" is according to Happyjacks.
Just pondering...

It is sometimes very entertaining to have opposing view points. I think that was often the appeal of the Tappy episodes. He and Stu would not always see eye to eye...that and Ammmmmmmaaaaaazing. There definitely is something very counterintuitive going on with this listener drop... I would say that HJ has never had greater exposure, content and organization than it has right now. The sound quality is at its best, the video feed is crystal clear and shiny. It’s got the Sultana of Organization making sure all cylinders are firing. This should be the time when audience size begins to take the hockey stick climb that leads to Stu Venable retiring early from his day job and just gaming/podcasting all the time and riding off into the nerdiest nirvana of sunsets. I find it baffling.
