And also... HyveMynd. This thread. Oh my god, how times have changed. I've got a grin from ear to ear. Ok, now you have to let us in on the joke. I think it started during the depths of the tappy drought of '05 and '06. PbtA was slipping its tantalizing tendrils around the hearts of many a hippie gamer, possessing them with a fervent need to proselytize. Many a trad gamer was turned off, being weary of wolves in gamer clothing, and the great Stu Venable himself was bothered by the constant barrage of story gamer claiming the coming of RPG enlightenment. A few hosts were able to fight off blind devotion, but fought for the recognition of the PbtA goodness, and slowly the love spread. And now we sit and rejoice in the glow of a thread almost wholly subsumed by hosts exclaiming the glory. All praise the apocalypse.

Totally see where HyveMynd is coming when she says the GM fiat thing possibly being a damper for some players in regards to the failures, especially if it's regarding how the character reacts. As an example in Monster Hearts, the danger could be having your character get turned on, and then having the GM tell you how you react. This can lead to less investment and feeling like you are losing ownership of the character. (The whole "but that's not what I'd do", and I'm not talking about from the perspective of "I don't want to lose", but maybe "that's not how I actually see the character acting".) That said, I'm also totally on board with how StrangeLikeThat and hoobuk are saying it's also a matter of trust at the table, or homosuperior saying it helps him by being able to react to a thing, and spawns innovation. My favorite tables have been a combination of these, where the failure occurs, and the GM chimes in with a "Oh, I have an idea here. How about..." <blah blah blah> "...does that sound cool, player one?" That gives me as the player the ability to agree or dissent... "oh shit ya, dope idea. let's do it...", but also "yah, I don't think she'd do that. She'd probably be more like ...", or even the sometimes the very excited "oh, hold up. I have a different idea..." (And it could be that in your table you know the players will speak up if they have other ideas, so you don't have to do the "does that sound cool?" part, because maybe it's implied.) And also... HyveMynd. This thread. Oh my god, how times have changed. I've got a grin from ear to ear.

My friend Kyle on another community is trying to create a Mecha game using World of Dungeons as the base. World of Dungeons is the simplified hack of Dungeon World, so it'll be PbtA-lite-ish. You can check out some of his videos at www.youtube.com/user/wiegraf9009. Specifically here is where he starts the process, but keep in mind this is very recent, so it still has distance to go:

Atlas Reckoning is DOPE. I've run it over half a dozen times, and always had great games. It's mainly written by Stras, who is also heavily involved in Blades in the Dark (BitD), including being a big part of Scum and Villainy (the sci-fi hack for BitD which should be coming in short order). I wouldn't call Atlas Reckoning a PbtA hack because it's so far removed from that, and honestly I'm not sure what of it'd DNA comes from that at all, other than using playbooks / archetypes. It's playing-card based as far as mechanics, and actually quite crunchy during the Engagement (combat) phase, but quite story-game during the Downtime phase. I can't recommend it enough... except that it's also not really available in any form other than private beta right now. Stras was going to Kickstart it this year in April but instead got busy with other gaming matters, so it's been delayed. But again, if you are interested, you could post about it up on the community page. This was the actual play recording of a game for Big Bad Con 2017, which includes our jazzisblues !

I'll be playing in Jason's demigods game Fri 2pm, then running Ten Candles Fri 8pm.
Saturday is all Games on Demand (9am, 2pm, maaaaybe 10pm); doing the podcast at 8pm.
Sunday is going to pick up the kid and do kid things and then run Games on Demand Kids at 2pm. Probably play werewolf with the kids from 9pm to midnight, then see if the other kid parents will play with them until 3am, and I'll just fuck around for those 3 hours until I can pass out.

I love this idea! That's great fun! I always enjoy vignettes, so if StrangeLikeThat doesn't use this, I probably will. Oh, I found the video! Here's their first session in that series. The concept was sort of a Breakfast Club with everything revolving around detention on Saturday. I put this link to start at the time when Jason starts with play (after the initial character setup and strings and such). One really cool thing he does here as well is "Painting the Scene", which is when he is showing a facet of a place (in this case a PC's room) and asks everyone else a question to show what the place is like... "What do we see that shows Sophia's room as one of a messy teenager with an occult enthusiasm?" He asked all the other PCs, but ended on that PC to round it out. Oh, and warning: these aren't short vignettes... in this case it was pretty much the play for session Zero... a whole bit of RP around getting ready in the morning, and having them interact with various family members, etc.

Only got to dive in for an hour somewhere towards the end, but it was fun to watch. Can't wait for some more play action, but I love that y'all did that little homeroom scene at the end of "session zero"; gave just a bit of action and characterizations which helped kick-start the series.
I wrote it in the chat, but there is this other thing I've seen Jason Cordova from the Gauntlet do in his Monsterhearts games, which is another way of doing end-of-session-zero play (or another pre-homeroom play). It looks kind of like this: He has each of the players do a "preparing for school in the morning" scenes. This is sometimes just a little vignette, with the PC showing how they get ready or get to school. Or it's a roleplay with the GM depending on the parents and other associated NPCs that are associated with those scenes.

Yah, I've tried so many APs from different groups, and just thought I didn't like APs. Until I found the ones I do. Pocket Sized Play and Comic Strip AP - they play a session or a few of an RPG, small tables generally (often 1:1), and even after playing a session with little fluff and out-of-game chit-chat, they then edit it down further, and release it in 10 minute episodes. I'm fucken hooked. Monsterhearts, Malandros, The Woodlands (PbtA Mouse Guard), Coriolis, Dungeon World, Don't Rest Your Head, Murderous Ghosts, Burning Wheel, Urban Shadows, Dogs in the Vineyard, Monster of the Week, The Indie Hack... I go on, but only because it's worth going on. ( joecrak: No WWW on these APs, but there are many recordings of the community playing it on Youtube)

The big issue with this rule is that the author is trying to insert their politics and agenda... Uh, in the first place isn't the whole game based, in a sense, on their "politics and agenda"? That IS the game. ...even though it contradicts the design goal of the game. The entire game is set up to take away agency of thought and emotion from the player. This move lets selective people take back that agency by saying on a case by case basis if they want to be turned on or not. That's just not acceptable. It undermines what makes the game good and "queer" friendly. That was the way the game was designed, and then it changed, due to new views and other things, including nuances in the understanding the author had of others considered 'queer'. So, it seems to undermine what makes the game queer-friendly for you (and possibly others), but maybe it actually opens the game up to others who also had experiences that have made them queer, but that isn't specific to that mechanic. And you know what, yes it could be abused by someone trying to min-max the game so they don't get turned on by others. But then, are they really playing the right game?
