I've been visiting RPG.net a bit more frequently nowadays, but I still make it a point to check these forums at least twice a day. I also visit a proboards forum that my group has set up daily, and check Douchey DM and Angry DM on occasion.

I guess the reality for me right now is that I'm not going to be able to afford anything for a couple months at least, so I may as well just table my considerations for the time being :-) Thanks for those pictures, Mook, it was actually really helpful to see the iPad text side-by-side with the books.
Nobuo, what about the Fire's native PDF reader do you dislike? I think that I could get over the small size, as I've been known to put PDF's on my phone and consult them for rules, but I've also heard that the Fire is kind of glitchy in it's current state. Have you had problems with it?
UPDATE: I was given a Kindle Fire as a gift from my wonderful girlfriend for our anniversary. So far, I've only tested a couple PDF's on it, but so far, they seem okay. I've used the Adobe Reader app, and it's recognized the bookmarks and I can read the text without any issues. My biggest complaint is that it still seems to have trouble loading the pages fast enough for my tastes, and navigation without bookmarks would be a nightmare.
Once I get a chance to use it in a game, I'll update again to let everyone know how it fares!

Oddly enough, I'm considering moving to Iowa to begin grad school... Good to know that there's some gamers out there!

I've had the same thoughts and reservations about getting a tablet for gaming. I've considered getting a Kindle Fire for these purposes, but I'm not in any place to spending any kind of money right now. I know someone who has one, so I may borrow it just to see if it handles the PDF's well before dumping all of that money.

After reading that article, I suddenly understand why my friend has a near-crippling fear of kangaroos...

Pretty cool! This isn't particularly related, but I work in a biology research lab, and one of my coworkers brought in a very blue banana a couple weeks ago. Apparently, one of his friends is working in a nutrition lab, and they've developed a banana that contains many essential vitamins and somehow ends up blue in the end. For some reason, this made me think of their bluenana, haha.

Perhaps a bit cliche, but...
Something odd is going on. The Cult of the Smiling Face has been more active lately, frantically collecting any little scraps of nothing they can find. The stockers have been rumored to be wielding new weapons, but how did they get them? There are whispers of His return, but could it really be true? Could Sam Walton really have come back to restore Wal-Mart to it's former glory? Not if you have anything to say about it...
Best of luck!

I tried to play a game via Skype with some friends a couple years ago. I found that games that require a grid of some sort (i.e: Pathfinder) were difficult for me to play without having a physical map in front of me. We didn't have any kind of virtual map or anything, though, and I imagine that Google Christ must have rectified this if it's become a favorite for online gaming. On the other hands, games that were somewhat more narrative, such as nWoD, worked out better via Skype.
Ultimately, I decided that long-distance games just weren't for me. I discovered that a lot of my interest in the story and game in general was generated by simply being with friends, and by removing the physical interaction, I had also removed a large portion of my interest in the game. This is an issue that I just couldn't overcome, and eventually dropped out to find a more local game. That's more of a personal issue for me though, so YMMV. I hope it works out for you!

I remember hearing about Troll Hunter and wanting to watch it, but I haven't gotten around to it. Looks like the time has come!

While I was in school, we had our weekly games in our Union, which worked out really well. I currently work as a research scientist at a university, but it's too far from my players to make it a feasible option for them. I've recently learned that our local library actually hosts a Pathfinder Society game biweekly, so maybe they've got an extra room that we could play in. I'll look into that.
I really like the idea of a portable TV tray, or rolling cart. I think that those would probably solve my problem handily. Thanks!

I'd love to play at a local game shop, but unfortunately, there aren't any that are less than 30 minutes away from me. Several years ago, there were two shops, one that was even within walking distance, but they've both since disappeared :-(

Luckily, the living room is donated to us for the entirety of the night, and we have a nice big flatscreen that is visible from our table. I hadn't thought about using it for a digital battle mat; that's a great idea. We've been doing well without a mat for this game, but if and when we move back to Pathfinder, I'll definitely keep that in mind.
Thanks for the replies, everyone!

I was going to post this in the show topics thread, but I don't think that it really merits an entire topic, so I'll just leave it here.
I've recently moved into a two-bedroom apartment with my girlfriend and another couple. The apartment is really nice, but as is the case with most apartments, pretty small. Now, my girlfriend is one of those special few who tolerate RPG's in their places of residence. She even occasionally clears off our small kitchen table to play on, which is great, but well... small.
I'm currently running a SW game set in Rapture from Bioshock (I got the idea from another Happy Jacker; whoever you are, thank you!) We have four players that show up regularly, and with the five of us, there's little room to spare. There are others who come and go, which only aggravates the problem. I realized that I was taking up more than 1/3 of the table with my stuff, which was composed of a GM screen, laptop, pad of paper, pencil, and several dice. The only book we were using was the SW Deluxe edition, which someone constantly held on their lap to conserve table space. If I ever wanted to use a battle mat, it would have to be on a separate table, or more realistically, the floor (we don't have another table :-P)
To the other GM's out there: how do you manage table real estate? Do you use screens and/or laptops? Do you have clipboards or something for PC character sheets so that they're not on the table? I've typed up all of the additional rules that I've made for the Rapture setting, including stat blocks, powers, locations, etc. and regularly reference these files during the game. Would I be better off just printing everything and eliminating the laptop from the table? Unfortunately, I don't have an iPad or similar tablet, so that's not an option (yet.)
Thanks for your help!

A player as experienced as this guy claimed to be should have known that what he was doing was ruining the game for everyone else. A good GM would have cut him off no more than 5-10 minutes into his raid. I agree with Taronicos as well; petty theft like that just isn't profitable mechanically. Now, if this character was a thief before he discovered the lucrative pursuit of adventure, I could understand the first one or two games involving petty theft, but after he gets his first 50 gold (or more!) from the bottom of a dungeon, I think most thieves would realize that 2d4 silver is not worth losing a hand for (or whatever the punishment for theft is.) P.S: riff- I used to read Sluggy daily. I'll have to pick it back up!
