I'll give Dresden another shot, then. Thanks, and sorry to derail the thread >.<

I watched the first episode of the Dresden Files, and I just couldn't bear it, to be honest. I devoured those books after hearing them mentioned on the podcast, but just felt that the show didn't really do it justice. I guess I shouldn't judge it based on just watching one episode, but does it get better after that? Or am I just picky?
Well, come September, our lease will be up and my girlfriend and I will probably have relocated to a new state. Perhaps if we still have a DVR, I can establish dominance early, and things will be different!

I hadn't heard of this til now. If it's on Netflix, I'll definitely give it a shot. My girlfriend has claimed total control over the DVR, and I'm not typically home enough to watch most shows with any regularity.

Yeah, it sounds like WW is intending on revamping several of the classic games under the project title "Onyx Path." I'm unsure whether they're making changes and/or releasing new content for the classic games, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did. This would probably be the best time for a newbie like me to try out the older stuff.

That sounds reasonable to me, although the last sentence of the spell that fray posted seems to suggest that pushing someone into the pit does NOT allow for a save. All the same, I could see someone's tuned reflexes allowing them to jump away at the last minute, or grab on to the edge of the pit.

I saw that, but I had posted this topic before you put your video up. I haven't had a chance to watch it just yet, but I plan to in the near future. Thanks!

I basically stopped playing DnD when 4E hit the shelves. I played one game of 4E, didn't like it, and decided to stick with 3.5, then quickly moved on to the Pathfinder beta. I agree that I don't want another 3.5 clone, because I already have a 3.5 clone that I very much enjoy. Just like how 4E was a completely new game, I honestly would prefer to see something totally new.
WotC's biggest challenge will be to convince players to dump 4E in favor of 5E. That didn't go so well when they introduced 4E, since they lost a lot of players to Pathfinder. I know that all of the current 4E players will be pissed at having to buy new books (again,) but in order to make the brand profitable, WotC needs to come up with something new and fresh.

Thanks again, PT. I can completely relate to what your friend was saying about Austin, and actually, reading that comparison gave me a much clearer picture of the differences between the two cities. Austin is kind of the melting pot of Texas, with all kinds of interesting and different people. Most of everyone is pretty cool, with the exception of the frat boy invasion and the occasional asshole, but being the only blue speck in a sea of red tends to attract a more diverse crowd. It's interesting to hear that IC differs in that way.
Veremond, I'll be sure to check out the theatre over there if I end up in IC! I'm starting to really miss participating in theatre, but I just don't have the time for it right now :-(

I just read the 4 Jan blog post, and I have to say, I'm a bit more intrigued now. I REALLY like the idea of allowing multi-classing, since I feel like most MMO's I've played don't allow this (GW was an exception, but you could only take two classes, and that was the rule more than the exception.) It's cool to see that single-classed characters get a bonus that multi-classed characters don't as well, meaning that choosing whether to multi-class or not is a meaningful and significant choice.
I also like the idea that this game isn't being designed to consume your life, like taronicos said. Their proposed hybrid subscription plan is interesting; it seems like subscriptions are becoming less popular and systems involving micro-transactions are popping up more and more. Price points and content restrictions will dictate the fairness of this kind of system, of course, but the idea is pretty cool.

Very cool ideas, hyvemynd! I may end up stealing some of those at some point in time if I run an espionage-style game.

Obviously, the most important thing to happen at the end of a game is some sort of closure. The story needs to reach a good stopping point. Think about a series of books; the plot needs to reach a point similar to how one of the books might end.
If you're truly reaching the end of a campaign, however, I can only think of two ways to end the story. Either the characters succeed in achieving their goals, or they fail to achieve their goals (which sometimes, but not always, means death.) I would leave that part up to the players, personally- put them through a final, particularly tough encounter. I like to think of this as the "grand finale." Of course, this would require more work than preparing other encounters, but if done right, I think that the players would appreciate a positive outcome just as much as a negative one, especially since it wasn't forced upon them.

Thanks a lot, pukkatukka! I hadn't thought to ask about libraries, bookstores, or theatre (I began as a theatre major in school, so being able to see some interesting shows every now and then would be GREAT!). I'll be visiting from Jan 26-28, but I'm not sure that I'll have time to actually see the city. I think that if the interviews go well, I may come back to get a better feel for the area, but from what you've described, it sounds very similar to Austin.
Again, thanks for putting all of that together. I definitely owe you a beer or two!

I was hesitant to post this, since I know it risks starting a flame war, but since there seem to be few WoD players here, it might be safe Which game is your favorite? I've heard many people say that old WoD, or Classic WoD as WW has started calling it, has a richer world, and that most people prefer those lines. I've only played nWoD, but I have had the chance to play several lines from it. Personally, I really enjoy Changeling and Mage. I haven't had the opportunity to play Geist, but I've had small encounters with the rest of the games. I like the Magic system in Mage, since it allows for very unique ways of presenting and solving problems, but the Changeling world is definitely my favorite.

Yeah, that was definitely helpful, and interesting to boot! That plus the other anecdotal threads make me want even more to pick this up and give it a go.
