This is pretty neat. I've been listening to this collection during work today. Never thought I'd see the day when a link posted by fray made me more productive at work...

I don't think that there was a definite timeline on this, but Shane had also mentioned that a Deluxe Explorer's Edition was in the works, and would be released when the hardcovers had sold out. If you don't have a problem dropping $30 on the hardcover version (totally worth it, IMO) I'd get one copy of that for the group for now. If you guys end up liking it, the players can pick up the softcover version later so that there are a couple more copies at the table.
As far as beginner's essentials go, for a fantasy game, you should get a copy of the core rules and the fantasy companion. The companion will help you modify the game rules to better fit a fantasy setting. I'd also recommend a premade setting if you don't have something in mind already; like Azuretalon said, Hellfrost is a pretty fleshed out fantasy setting made for SW.
Best of luck!

Hey guys, I just wanted to plug my friend's developing game, Bitdust RPG. He and I went to school and gamed together, and I playtested a very early version of the game that he was putting together. The game has changed a lot since the last time I got a chance to play it, but it was a lot of fun back then, and I'm sure that it's only gotten better. Unfortunately, I'm not really a big fan of sci-fi, so I can't really think of anything to compare it to, but I'd appreciate it if you checked out his Kickstarter and threw a couple bucks his way if it's something you might enjoy playing. www.kickstarter.com/projects/1316189427/bitdust-the-roleplaying-game

I created my account on the old forums only a couple weeks before they went down, so I should probably introduce myself. I've been listening since something like July of this year, and am still working my way through the older episodes. This podcast has introduced me both to great games and great beer, two of my favorite things. I'm currently running a Savage Worlds game set in Rapture from Bioshock (I believe that I got the idea from someone who wrote into the show at some point, so to whoever that is, thank you!) and I'm playing in a GURPS fantasy game.

I'm starting grad school in August, and have applied to three schools so far: University of Iowa, Boston University, and UTSW (Dallas). I'm flying up to CID at the end of January to interview with UI, but I'm not certain that I'll have time to get a chance to really get a feel for Iowa City. I know that at least one or two of the people on this forum are from that area, so I'd be interested to hear what you guys have to say about it. It sounds like there's a pretty healthy gaming population there (something completely foreign to me,) and from what I've heard, it kind of has a similar vibe to Austin, TX.
In particular, I'm interested in:
-Public transportation to get to work, groceries, and home -Coffee shops that aren't Starbucks -Reasonably priced living spaces near campus -Hole in the wall bars that don't require earplugs -FLGS that hosts games
Thanks, and happy holidays!

I find that I have a hard time getting into MMO's in general, and a monthly fee is usually enough to turn me off completely. I played Guild Wars on and off for a while, but never got into WoW. It wasn't ever really because I didn't have the money for it ($15/mo or whatever it is isn't outrageous,) but the subscription was just the straw that broke the camel's back. It sounds like there will be a fee to play this game, so I doubt that I'll join the ranks.
Outside of that, it looks pretty neat. I really like the idea of letting players shape the world, and keeping the game exclusive is a great way to ramp up interest. On the other hand, by limiting PFO's player base, they can't take advantage of WoW's flagging popularity. It's possible (albeit unlikely) that by the time membership has opened up, the video game market no longer favors huge, pay-to-play MMO's like WoW and PFO.
tl;dr: Cool concept, probably won't play it.

I'll have to check out Ticket to Ride. After hearing so many people singing its praises, it must be good! I tend to stick more to card games: Illuminati, Chez Geek, and Gloom are favorites around our apartment. I've played Arkham Horror once, and very much enjoyed it, but it typically requires more of a commitment than my non-gamer friends are interested in.

I made my first GURPS character last month using GURPS Character Sheet. It was a little confusing to use, but it worked out alright. For me, the most daunting aspect of making a character was wading through the Ads/Disads and skills, and having a searchable list greatly streamlines the process if you're not certain beforehand which skills you want.

Sounds like a very cool setting, though I'm wondering why you chose FATE instead of Savage Worlds's Realms of Cthulhu. I've never played FATE before, so I'd like to know what FATE offers that SW doesn't. Not trying to start a flame war here, just honestly curious, haha.

As a Texan, I have a lot of Shiner Bock in my beer diet. I very much enjoyed Sierra Nevada's Tumbler while it was around, but I apparently bought my first 6 pack the day before it went off the shelves or something. I also have been known to drink Leinenkugel's (though I didn't much care for the Fireside Nut Brown,) Boddington's, Guiness Extra Stout, Sam Adams, and most anything else that doesn't include 'Light' in it's name.
Muertog, if you've got a sweet tooth, I'd suggest trying Leinenkugel's Berry Weiss or Sunset Wheat. In my experience, they're about as sweet as beer gets before crossing into the false territory of Smirnoff.

I've skimmed the quick start Fiasco PDF, and as everyone else has already said, it looks like a whole lot of fun. One of my groups seems to have trouble with campaigns, and I'm starting to think that they would be better off with a more episodic game, or maybe just a bunch of one-shots. Fiasco sounds perfect for this.
Unfortunately, I'm having a bit of trouble picturing how it works from the Quick Start. Can someone who has actually played the game give us some short anecdotes about games they've played, and how they went?
