Since we now have two recorded gaming sessions, I've created a new podcast channel at Happyjacks.org. The feed for the new channel is: happyjacks.org/?feed=actualplayThere are only two sessions there now: the Ghostbusters: LA game from a couple years ago, and our first L5R game (which is still uploading) WARNING: These sessions are not edited. There are interruptions, there are tangent, there are pauses of silence when the players are trying to figure out what to do. Please know this going in.

Thank you for running the game Stu. It was great.
I would also like too add that we are all learning this game as we go, so its not the most serious, and its not the most RP heavy. This might be considered more of a play test than an actual game.
That being said, I'm looking forward to continuing on with this same character, and the world, now that I know how things work, and I have a better idea of my pre gen character and what he is capable of.
Also, thank you to Dave and Tyler who are great players and make six hours of sitting in a small room seem like one.

Been listening for a bit now. Almost 2 hours in at this point. So far it seems like you guys are doing a great job. Mechanics grasp seems solid. A few setting things are a bit off but nothing that's a big deal. A few things I've picked up on so far(Listening at work between calls so I may not be as attentive as I'd like): Crane clan? Really? You had to play Crane first off? Puke. (I'm a Lion guy from WAY back. Hah!) Your insight rank is the leveling process. So that leveling is not purely based on XP. Your "rank" is based on the total of all the aspects of your person. So you can level quickly by soaking all of your xp into attributes and be not so skilled, you can level fairly slowly by putting all of your points into skills and kata and whatnot, or you can go the medium route by spreading them out. Its a system I quite enjoy, very flexible. I like the story so far, very fitting for the setting. Is it a prewritten adventure or did Stu come up with it? More comments as I listen in a bit more.

There are a few things I noted about the game when reading/researching it.
1. People are crazy enthusiastic about the setting. This is both good and bad. It's good because the game has a rich, flourishing setting. And there are lots of resources to learn the setting. It's also very daunting to someone who come to the game knowing virtually nothing about it (like me). If I had players who were familiar with the game (unlike what I had), I would have been less inclined to run a game, since, kind of like Star Wars, people are either really knowledgeable about the setting or they don't care how close you are to "canon." That's one of the reasons
2. RAW, it's a deadly game. I love (LOVE!) the wound system. It's a great way to abstractly convey the loss of effectiveness in combat as you get beaten down without getting bogged down in details. It's also remarkable how quickly a good damage roll can cut through the wound ranks rather quickly.
We're going to run a second session. Probably have the players make characters.

Just started listening. Because I know Stu cares... The sound quality is good. Not as good as the podcast, but quite good for an actual play.

We actually played in the recording booth over a small table. I used a couple omni condenser mics and compressed the hell out of them.
I'm wondering if I should compress them more. When we get quiet, is it hard to hear?
I could also record with a single mic and see how that goes. It would sound less "room-y" that way.

Listening to it now and trying hard not to laugh out in the middle of the office.

Yes, sorry. thats what i meant, you can tell its been compressed (or compressed more then the regular podcast) but it still sounds quite good. Compressing it more when there's nobody talking might help but that sounds suspiciously like work.
I'm not having trouble hearing anybody, thought CADave should probably lean back when he eats trail mix.
I'm at the point where they're meeting the Old Man who's in charge of the valley and CADave is saying "Lets get all the seed into one place!" And I'm like, "Nooooooo!"

As a 15 year veteran of L5R I think you did a fantastic job with the setting and the system. I am now done with listening and have only a few things to say:
Honor is a tricky bugger. Tyler was right in how the chart is listed. The losses are listed in boxes(what they were called in previous editions), not in ranks. You -WILL- get players arguing Honor since its such an alien concept and easily the hardest aspect of the setting to grasp for westerners.
Did I hear someone say they touched dead people? Loading them into a cart? Get yourself cleansed... stat! That's a big no-no. That's why eta are considered non-people, they touch dead things. Very unclean.
This is a personal thing, but when CADave said "Does that hit without exploding?" I cringed. Always respect the 10's. In my games we always ran a houserule where if the same die exploded twice you got a free raise on your next roll.
Back to the honor thing, stabbing a bandit in the back would NOT be dishonorable. They are not samurai and criminals.
Also, throwing a yari uses Reflexes and not Agility(don't think you caught that), and I'm pretty sure there is a damage rating difference. (Nitpicky, but just wanted to point it out.)
Overall though, great job to all four of you.

Where are you seeing to use Reflex for throwing? Just asking because it came up in my last game and seemed like agility to me. Though a lot of the rules I try to find I spend hours looking for and it ends up being in a small side box lost in text.

Nice one, I think you did pretty well with the rules, too; I was just wandering what the PC's schools (classes) were, because I didn't see their techniques come into play much, they pretty much define how you act in combat, especially the Kakita Bushi one.
Also a couple more things: I see honor as being a measure of how a superior, ultra honorable being would judge you in the afterlife based on how samurai-like you were acting. You can be a very loyal person and still having very low honor (see scorpion). It is something of an inner karma thing.
You can't use the iaijutsu skill to learn another's "stats" outside ouside of a duel, it is supposed to represent reading the way positions himself as the duel starts.
When you are making characters don't underestimate the courtiers, having just one of them in the group can open a bunch of different ways to solve your problems. Most of them have really cool social techniques and each one has his own niche. Besides the system is designed so they are not completely useless in combat, they may not be very good at killing (even though they can learn bushi skills), the can stay in defense stance (you can do anything but attack) and help by using the guard maneuvre on bushi, or do other useful things like securing doors and windows or setting things on fire.

Throwing an item, using a bow, etc. Its been like that since the very first edition. I couldn't tell you right off hand exactly where its at though.

Stu,please tell your wife that her すみません (sue-mee-mah-sen) sounded great. Next time though, to be truly authentic, she should drop the final "n" sound and draw out the "seh" as long as possible and with a rising pitch so that it ends in an ungodly whine that'll send all your dogs running from the house in pain. ;D

I looked up the definition of the word "Winning"
It read like this: "swearing upon your honor that you will kill bandits in two days. If you fail, then you must commit suicide."
