I know that in pre-British India the there was a special cast who dealt with the dead. They were both revered and reviled at the same time.
Fairly sure the eta class took care of that duty in Feudal Japan. I know that they handled the carcasses of dead animals. They were an outcast sect of society.
Also as far as I know in feudal Japan only Samurai were allowed to wear swords or carry any weapons unless they had special dispensation form the local Daimyo. Peasants found with weapons without permission could be executed, a means of avoiding peasant uprisings.

Which is one of the things that lead to many of the types of weapons we see in Asian martial arts. (nunchaku, and the three sectional staff started out life as a grain flail). JiB

There is even a special sect of peasants that are the ones allowed with non-peasant weapons and those are called budoka and are actually somewhat trained by samurai. Ashigaru are basically conscripted spearmen and canon fodder, budoka are actually trained to use real weapons.

I am completely ignorant of the history and the game system... but find all of it (including the actual play episodes) fascinating and entertaining.

^ Ditto, am really enjoying the actual plays so far and looking forward to the next session. If I wasn't trying to cut back on my RPG purchases I'd definitely be tempted to go out and buy a copy of the system, the fact that everybody on the podcast is new to it has made it a lot more accessible than if they'd all been well versed in the system and setting.

I am giddy beyond belief that so many of the listeners are now really interested and into L5R. I have been spreading the love about this game for years and mostly on deaf ears. Most people see a sort of fantasy asia as a lame idea. I don't get it because I find it more interesting than standard fantasy.

I had the PDF's for the game, but my lady just bought me the hardbound core for Christmas (As well as a Boggards CD and a MWOW CD), and it's perhaps the most gorgeous book I own. I lied in Okinawa for a few years when young, and visited some other asian countries, so I have always felt at home with asian fantasy cultures.

It's kind of a refreshing change from the standard Tolkien-clone fantasy.
I think the thing that's most refreshing to me as a GM is the fact that there's an expectation of honor for EVERYONE. It changes the whole tone of the game.
And this may be a record for me as to the number of sessions before a PC lights a building on fire.

So the one thing I've been disappointed with while listening to these otherwise fantastic AP podcasts is...The Lack Of Funny Accents!! (No I don't mean potentially offensive bad sushi chef accents...but any accent really.). After all of the truly bad ass ridiculous accents during email readings I was expecting some truly "audio drama" style characterizations. I want my money back :-)!!
Looking forward to the next one!

God as my witness, I seriously considered doing all in-game dialogue with Engrish accents.
"Okay, everyone got their character sheets? Dice? Snacks? Beer? Awesome. Let's start...
"The year is ereven seventy.."

Still listening to the first of the L5R sessions... I got the early upload of it, and didn't realize that it wasn't the complete session.
As a current CCG player, and story follower here's some advice.
Remember. As Crane samurai:
Your battle cry is "NOT THE FACE!!" Powder Blue is the new black. Whatever you're doing, do it with style. Better fucking maps (sorry.... I may still be bitter over a story point....)
And if you ever want to see what you're really made of, come down to the Crab lands and serve a tour on the Wall. We promise, most of the ichor will wash out of your clothes....
eventually.....
maybe.....

Because of my new job and its schedule I've had to drop nearly all of my games that I was GMing. Now I run Wild Talents and play in a Pathfinder game. The only time I have available anymore is Sundays. Would there be any interest out there in me running a Google + game of L5R on Sunday afternoon/evenings?

I've been listening for about a year now, But just now decided to make an account on these boards when I heard you had started playing L5R. I play both the CCG and the RPG. In fact, I am currently involved with Winter Court 3; wintercourt.l5r.com/index.phpIt is a mass PBP with about 150-200 players. Whatever happens in this court is added to the official canon of L5R.
