and uh, yeah. flame wars. sorry. It happens . . . though the board has gone very quiet since I kinda keep hoping for some contention to get things going again (I was never very good at being a hippy - too many fluffy bunnies, cuddles and happiness . . . Maybe we should invite some more trolls over for argument)

Just my opinion, but I think that lively debate is one of the things that makes this community special. We have a lot of different people with a lot of wildly different ideas and experiences.
Cheers,
JiB

Cheers, JiB I agree . . . it's just a little absent at the moment . . . feels as if everyone is being 'safe' at the moment

In terms of flame wars, for me its less being fluffy bunny happy rainbows... its more that I just don't care enough. I have my opinions, and I support those opinions. I just don't care enough to put the effort in to argue that point with someone else. That is the biggest reason I have left forums in the past. People get their panties in a twist and want to rip on other people for perceived slights and other bullcrap. I just don't care enough, and I would hate to see this place become that since its the only forum I even bother with anymore.

I just don't care enough, and I would hate to see this place become that since its the only forum I even bother with anymore. I'm absolutely not advocating flame wars, it's just that everyone is being very 'safe' at the moment . . . guarded is a better word. I would prefer open honest debate about differences of opinion rather than avoiding conflicts or 'agreeing to disagree'. 'The agree to disagree' position should be used after debate and discourse has failed rather than being the default. ie It was appropriate after the 'spoilers' discussion because it had been discussed fervently with no obvious resolution or mediation of opinion. Opinion's are fine but they're worth more if one is willing to challenge them and have them challenged in turn - that's how we progress and gain better understanding. A good analogy can be found in games and play testing - ones opinion is the game, the play test is the challenge/discourse the result is a better and more robust opinion (which, comfortable or not, may have to change if it fails at the play testing/challenge phase). BUT the prime caveat is it should be mature and civilised discourse (unless one has some particularly amusing insult applied with tongue firmly in cheek to lighten the mood . . . Like I've said before I'm Australian and I like swearing and regularly call my mates bastards and, yes the podcast was absolutely spot on, fucking cunts)

Funny story:
So my wife and I are in the studio on Saturday afternoon recording the next Wives' CD, and she sees the email document sitting the uncomfortable hunk of couch and picks it up and starts reading it.
Her: <gasp> "I can't believe he called you *that* word!"
Me: "Huh?"
Her: "This one here. 'Good Morrow C-word.' "
Me: <laugh>
Her: "Are all your listeners this abusive?"

I honestly use that word a lot, not being offensive, just because I think its stupid to get angry over a word. And "a lot" is a bit of a misnomer.

Funnily enough I had an argument with my mum many years ago about THAT word, bearing in mind she is a strong feminist and used to work in the Woman's Rights Office at the local University. Anyways, she objected "because it objectifies a woman's genitaila as an insult" my reply was "yeah and you just called that wanker driver over there a prick for cutting in front of you, one of the lecturers at Uni a dick, you've called numerous people cocks and often added both those words as a prefix to the word 'head' when you don't like someone; soooo by my count that's at least 5 offensive words that objectify my genitals as an insult to your 2 (twat being the other)". Never had that argument ever again and I noted that within a few weeks mum had also adopted THAT word into her lexicon of vulgarity.

They still make me laugh after all theses years . . . memories of being a teenager and swapping cassettes with mates at school with the plea 'don't let your mum or dad hear this' (and finding a pristine copy at the back of parents record collection years later)

I can honestly say that I have held back a lot of my flame comments, because it's not worth my fuckin time.
Like when Creative Cowboy started a thread about Table Top role playing games being put in a positive light or some shit. I responded, and so did other people. We answered a hypothetical question with hypothetical answers.
Then this fuckin cuntaculous fucktard jumps on the forum, creates an account, and makes his first post saying that he knew Creative Cowboy, and that we were all wrong and our comments made him laugh. He made other posts, but only on that thread. This shit fuck made an account to only flame on that thread.
I was so fuckin livid that I wrote out something on a word document and was ready to copy and paste. Then I realized that it would have devolved into name calling, and would have detracted from Creative Cowboy's question that he wanted answered honestly. I decided that my angry flame war comment would have detracted from that. So I never posted it.
I find myself doing that more on the forum, because the Happy Jacks community, at least to me, is one of intelligence. We have the ability to express ourselves effectively using whatever language we choose. That one ass hat who made an account simply to piss on everyone is NOT part of that community. So, why pay him any mind? Fuck him and his winking anus.

To backtrack a bit: Now that I've recently transplanted from TX to IA and started the long process of "donating" my soul and quite possibly lifeblood to ye Gods of Science, I've unfortunately been less plugged in here than before. That, of course, didn't stop me listening to the podcast, and after (finally) listening to this episode, found myself grinning while listening to Hyvemynd's email being read. I've had the opportunity to run Monsterhearts, and found it lots of fun. The weird thing was, the guys who were most interested in combat in our Pathfinder games were having the most fun with MH, and were practically begging for another game or two before, and while, I was packing my bags. I haven't yet been able to check out Apocalypse World, but I'm hoping to pick up a copy soon.
Props to Hyvemynd for bringing AW and its hacks into the HJ firing range, and I look forward to hearing what the hosts think about them!

We have the ability to express ourselves effectively using whatever language we choose. That one ass hat who made an account simply to piss on everyone is NOT part of that community. So, why pay him any mind? Fuck him and his winking anus. Yep . . . and the little trolling shite succeeded. Whatever one thought of CreativeCowboys opinions he was an active member of this board and tolerated despite his differences . . . because that's what HJ's is about, being douchebags and shooting the shit. The fucktard concerned certainly seemed to know how his comments would inflame and polarise opinion, especially as he refused to accept the moderate middle ground offered by several other posters independent of each other. I don't blame the persons concerned in the resulting flame war . . . they were just reacting to the provocation of the original fuck twat. Unfortunately though, now the dust has settled, CreativeCowboys obvious absence has been a consequence of that provocation. I believe, nay I know that none of the regular readers or posters of this board would have wished that to happen . . . words may be exchanged in anger on occasion and the shit shooting may get heated but that's all part and parcel of being united as a community of douchebags. Certainly the OP of the thread you mention knew exactly which buttons to push in an attempt to sprinkle us with his rancid yellow piss droppings while getting a rise from CC specifically. Whether this syphilitic cock knocker was who CC suspected him to be (suspicion by virtue of certain comments he'd made during his one day posting spree mirroring similar harassing comments that had been previously posted directly on to CC's facebook page) or not, he did mention being active on the WoTC forums which makes me suspect that he might also be one of those little munchkin arse chewing fuck knuckles that this board has frequently references when critiquing our concerns about the development of D&D Next. So I personally do give the arsehat some mind because his single day of piss spraying hasn't been without consequence. We may all be a bit nerdy and prone to bouts of nerd rage etc . . . but it really bothers me that someone can come from another board with a different philosophy to this community and yank our collective chain and/or can come here in pursuit of one of it's members to continue a personal attack. Again I stress that I do not blame the regular posters to this forum who, including myself, were involved in the flame war that resulted . . . but I do find myself wanting to Troll the Troll in turn over at the WoTC forums (or where ever he can be found) only with more vindictiveness (yeah yeah I know two wrongs don't make . . . ah fuck it, I'm True Neutral at heart and sometimes being evil feel soooo good)
