Unfortunately though, now the dust has settled, CreativeCowboys obvious absence has been a consequence of that provocation. I believe, nay I know that none of the regular readers or posters of this board would have wished that to happen . . . I doubt that any of the HJers, including myself, wanted to drive creativecowboy away from the forums. I don't know him personally, but as a fellow ex-pat living in a country where your native language is not the spoken language, I can imagine something of what he experiences on a daily basis. Of course he's probably much less of a slacker than I am and can probable speak near perfect Polish, where I still have to point and grunt like a chimp using sign language even after nearly 6 years over here.

I will admit to being amazed that people will announce how flame wars are so not worth their time but commenting on the flame wars after the fact is TOTALLY worth their time based on what I am seeing above.
Just seems a little...odd.
Now, I'll be the first to admit I butt heads with CC a lot, because he does things that make me go "Oh, no. That's a bit of bullshit there," and I am sorry, when I see what I believe to be bullshit, I am going to call it out. Now, Kainguru and I have talked privately and there does seem to be a cultural divide, and so I am trying to behave (I really do want to see where CC wanted to go with putting his laws of RPG player playing based on things a few of us said. I know you took the bait Kainguru but I will admit I am scared to post because I'm scared if I don't put exactly what CC wants I will get REALLY frustrated really quick...)
As for button pusher guy, you think taking the high road does anything? No. It makes people think they can get away with shit.
Little story. These 2 brothers had an issue with my buddy Butch, their neighbor and an old friend of mine. When I came up guy violated my personal space. Figured the man was autistic or something because people are not that stupid but it turned out he was trying to intimidate me. Turns out they were harassing my friend.
A few nights later there were eight of us with pipes and a knife. This was a simple message of you start shit for no reason, shit will end real quick. Escalate from here and you see how much more overwhelming we will take it to the next level.
People got left alone after that.
Somebody swings, you swing back.
Of course, your mileage may vary, and I respect your choice to disagree.

Actually, we were in Pennsylvania at the time... well, we were about 8 city blocks and a bridge away from New Jersey. You know, the most depressing thing about the HJ podcast is there are no cons in Philadelphia or New York that would draw the HJ crew here so I will never get to experience their GMing...unless I do some google stuff but I am still nervous about that...

I was born and raised in Philly (just like Will Smith, but in South Philly not West Philly) and went to university in Glassboro, New Jersey. My family drove to the Jersey Shore every summer, right there at Seaside Heights. I never saw Snookie though. Taking the NJ Transit busses on the weekend to visit my family while in college was an... experience. We had to go through Camden and frankly I'm surprised I never got shot, robbed, or stabbed while on one of those trips. Someone must have been watching out for me.

Lehigh Valley area, though I am quite familiar with South Philly. My dear friend Megan recently moved off Dickenson Street, my Aunt lived there and taught in the Barrio for years, and my cousin Trevor was a fixture at the Irish Times until his unfortunate death a few years ago. Camden. Saw a lot of great concerts down that way. Now it's taking my kids to the aquarium, or to central park in NYC.

I know I used the phrase "flame war," but I don't think we've had anything on this forum that I'd properly classify as a proper flame war.
There have been no threats to sue or anything like that (that's my favorite part about flame wars).
Speaking as someone who used to make sockpuppet accounts on several usenet groups, I know from flame wars.

And btw, I check the status of the user in question (I think I know who you're talking about), and he posted 6 or 8 times on one day only and hasn't logged on the forum since.
So, yeah.

So nuke the troll from orbit. It's the only way to be sure. Yeah that's what I'm thinking . . . I agree with EricfromNJ sometimes you have to stand up and call shit out and drop the nuke when you have to drop the nuke. The user in question wasn't a particularly brave troll because early on, in reaction to a comment directed at me, I told him I would be up for a flame war if that's what he wanted but he backed down . . . However, he kept making these stupid posts that were obviously designed to provoke the HJ community and he stopped once he got [the desired?] response from CreativeCowboy. I'm no Saint, I've inflamed things on other forums before now . . . But with what I believe was good reason. I did start a flame war on an SFX forum for people with depression . . . Because the advice that several of the senior posters were dolling out, with no authentic authority except they post and are/were depressed, was bullshit designed to reinforce the depressive state rather than attempt to resolve it. It was like a forum of AA participants sitting around and saying 'between us its actually ok to drink'. [nb I joined the forum with good intentions so I didn't use a sock puppet]. The Troll we had seemed intent on targeting one person . . . and I find it really annoying that he'd already hounded CreativeCowboy through Facebook prior to tracking him down to HJ's - that's fucking stalking last time I checked.

maybe I should have shot back. Honestly, I've never really posted on forums. This is the first one that I've actually paid attention to on a regular basis. What is the internet for if not to yell obscenities at each other anonymously?

It's not, but at the same time I don't really believe in just ignoring someone because you are just telling the person they can continue with the behavior. Really kainguru did it the best way messaging me privately when I was convinced CC was just a bully on the forums and was like "Have you thought about this?"
and I thought "Eh, fuck. No I didn't."
In other words, I think people should say something, but the way I did was probably not the right way to say stuff. I am a firm advocate of people speaking up. Like I said before, when people say they can't be bothered, then they comment about the flame war afterwards (bonus points if you include any phrasing that could be considered inflammatory in the post afterwards), then I call shenanigans.
Stu, people threaten to sue each other on flame wars? And what the hell is this about sock puppets?
Just my observation, mind you.

Sock Puppet = Disguising yourself by creating an alternative forum avatar/identity thru which you can misbehave without personal retribution. As for legal action? heh yeah . . . you can just laugh that one off 9 times out of 10 ref: in which state and which country do they wish to pursue the legal action? (cf: the history of The PirateBay). Which reminds me about the previous podcast and copyright . . . UK (and consequently Australian and New Zealand) copyright expires much sooner than US (The Presley Estate had a dicky fit recently because most of Elvis's early catalogue had, under UK law, entered the public domain)

But that's always a sign of a good flame war -- threats to sue for defamation or slander.
Ah, good times.

People = Me. In case anyone didn't pick up on that in Eric's post. You want people to call others out on their shit right?
