The chat towards the end about what the authorities think about our collective browsing history make me think of this: I've got the original artwork hanging in my dining room. Crisis was a right-on offshoot of 2000Ad. This depicts Ivan, one of the characters in the Third World War strip getting arrested because of his interest in RPGs.

I find it a bit amusing that the Shonen manga/anime Naruto was brought up later on during the show on an unrelated discussion. Because that first letter, the guy who wrote up a character that was essentially a bush league god with his powers sealed up? He was totally jacking the story premise for Naruto. First thing that leapt to mind when the letter was read.

Another crisis fan Troubled Souls, Third World War, The off shoot Finn - ecoterrorist and pagen. It was a sad day when it was stopped. So many good writers and artists started within the pages of Crisis. For the uninitiated Third World War was about neo-colonialism of the third world by governments and multinational corporations under the guise of humanitarian interests and aid - with a real agenda of exploitation and control both the populations and resources of said third world countries. Sound familiar? It was prophetic on many levels. Now here's a real test of memory - Revolver with the Dan Dare continuation (rather than the earlier reboot): a corrupt Govt. Dan Dare retired and suffering from PTSD after winning the war against the Mekon . . . and a liability because his memoirs would reveal the less than honourable manner in which that war was won Aaron

For the mead lovers and the mead curious. This is a very good meadry(?) Starrlight Mead. They are based out of Pittsboro, NC and does ship to states that allow direct shipping of alcoholic beverages. They are NOT champagne-like and most of their products have a good honey flavor with the infused spices or fruit they flavor the mead with. I recommend the Spiced Apple Mead that is warmed...it tastes like a liquid apple pie...AWESOME!

Man, JiB is such a Savage Worlds rules lawyer. He should learn to roleplay. Obviously, he's a video game player.

Though I think the mighty JiB is perfectly capable of defending his own opinions...I will say that initially when he said "don't cherry pick rules" my feathers were ruffled. "Don't tell me what I can and can't do with my game! Harumph!" But after some thought there's a definite merit to what he's saying. And as always the great compromiser stork did a good job of analogizing hacking a RPG system to hacking computer code. If you take a few components of a system out it could lead to that game being a bit of a trainwreck. The designers have spent a vastly larger amount of time than we as players creating something that works. I will still house rule the shit out of games but you will not find me turning around and saying "man! that savage worlds is a shitty system..." Especially when I've created a Frankenstein monster of my own game. I take full blame for my creations.

I can see issue three peeking cheekily at me from my bookshelves as I type. Dare, the future and Rogan Josh - an unbeatable combination. In my day job, I've been trying to convince an old UK rocketry testing site to use Rian Hughes, the artist on Dare to illustrate the interpretation. For that reason my collected album of Dare (lovingly printed euro-style) is getting damp in the car boot.

I will still house rule the shit out of games but you will not find me turning around and saying "man! that savage worlds is a shitty system..." Especially when I've created a Frankenstein monster of my own game. I take full blame for my creations. Gotta say I agree with JiB. By all means house-rule your system - if you want it to be SHIT. I posit that most house-rulers only THINK they know better than original designers. But fact is, by the time they hit the shelves, most decent systems have had thousands of hours of play testing, and dozens of iterations. The authors have devoted more time than we all have to game design (because WE have lives). To add hit points to Savage Worlds just cause we liked them in D&D betrays a lack of understanding of the system. If you want hit points, find a system you like that uses them! I'm not adverse to house-ruling, because I'm not adverse to experimentation. Fate after all positively encourages it. But I don't like people deciding that their house rule is the best way of doing it, because I think honestly they're likely to be wrong. Case in point. A friend was thinking about running Aces and Eights. I'd heard about it (on Happy Jacks, where else?) and was intrigued by the shot-clock system. Spent hours (days) building my character then turn up to find the GM saying "I don't like the shot clock thing, have x hit points" Well fuck you! I only wanted to play to try the shot-clock thing, and now we might as well be playing Boot Hill! is what I DID'T say, but we only played that one session, which sort of proves my point. If you think you want to house-rule ask yourselves two things. 1. Is there another system I'd actually rather be playing? 2. Do I want to go the full Stu and design my own system? (In which case - go right ahead! And players/play testers, house-rule the fuck out of that motherfucker! Because what you are doing isn't actually house-ruling, it's DEVELOPMENT.)

Confession, when I first came to the UK the first curry I ordered was . . . . a Rogan Josh, simply because 'Rogan Josh' . . . Gotta say I agree with JiB. By all means house-rule your system - if you want it to be SHIT. So then explain how many common house rules have ended up folded into some games when a new edition came out. No game is perfect and there is nothing wrong with a well thought out house rule.
