One thing stork ended up saying that bugged me, though, was his example of how he'd adjudicate a tension-rising scene, wherein he'd just say "No" to attempts at combat-oriented results. "No, we aren't going to do it that way." Maybe it's the meds talking this morning, but at that point I'd just sit back in the chair and ask him what my character does from then on. I think it was more about not rolling dice than no combat but I didn't take any meds at all :-) DUDE!!! You can't listen to Happy Jacks without meds! That's just insanity!

Yeah, you definitely don't want the GM narrating how the characters feel and how they should react, but I don't see a problem telling the players out of character how these things might affect someone, then let the players choose how far down the spectrum they want their character to go and RP that accordingly.

For World War One movies there are a few good ones.
The John Boy All Quiet on the Western Front is pretty good, the 1930 version is pretty devastating. Lost Patrol (1934) can give the similar kind of feeling in a desert setting, same with Lawrence of Arabia. Gary Cooper in Farewell to Arms is great but might not be directly applicable to games. The same with The Grand Illusion and the African Queen.
After ten or fifteen years and WW2 was looming the WWI movies made a dramatic turn from many anti-war stories to more heroic stories like Sargent York and a slew of bi-plane films like The Eagle and the Hawk, Dawn Patrol, and, of course, Hell's Angels directed by Howard Hughes.

And "Mutant Chronicles". I'm pretty sure that's how World War I went down...

On the subject of tension, I ran a horror themed adventure in a fantasy setting once. Because it was using the players' regular characters, I feel they had a stronger investment than if I had set it in a horror campaign.
One other thing that worked wonders was having a split up party, and just as new clues or threats are introduced to one subgroup, shifting the scene to another subgroup: a series of mini-cliffhangers.
