ayslyn, @stevensw To be fair, reviewing the OP, and the post I'm having a visceral reaction too, maybe I'm overreacting. But you know, experience with friends, and some things worded in ways that can vaguely sound off can sometimes have that consequence.

You're doing it again.... The OP wasn't saying anything of the sort. It was asking for specific stories. There was no collective anything. My comments aren't directed at the OP.

Why? The exception I take to the standard wisdom of women in gaming being good... On an individual basis: An individual woman in gaming being good? Yah, that depends on the person. Judge away. Respond to THEIR PARTICULAR ISSUE at the gaming table ("they hog the spotlight"), and not "what" they are (woman, man, non-binary, trans, language, race, religion). I think that all makes sense. Should you make an effort to include women more so than men? Should you make an effort to include more underrepresented people in the hobby? Some say 'yes' because it enhances representation in a space which may not be welcoming, and you'd find me in that camp. Some may say 'no. just be color-blind and treat everyone individually'. There's all sorts of articles on privilege that discuss these issues. About women as a group being good in gaming? Yes, I 100% believe this. The alternative is: "Women in the hobby are not good for gaming" or to a lesser extent: "Women in the hobby may not be good for gaming." In both cases you've classified a whole contingent of people based on something that has nothing to do with the topic at hand: Gaming. In both cases, that's some serious Gatekeeping. Unless of course you believe that it's possible that women may somehow have features that should allow you to exclude them as a group from tables, in general?

I am talking about your specific variation of the OP's specific post. I have no clue what you are now talking about. Sounds like a good place to stop for the day!

Only when taken completely out of context, Tomes. Yep. Or sometimes in context. That too. Flags aren't always accurate. But flags be flags!

"Now don't get me wrong. I don't mean all [Lindenstein] players are somehow the worst. I do mean to say that they aren't magical unicorns who can do no wrong. Gaming isn't inherently improved by a [Lindenstein] presence. It's improved by good gamers of any [nationality]. I'd rather be without [Lindensteiners] if the options are bad [Lindensteiners] players or no [Lindensteiners] players."
Sure. Valid. But it sure sounds like you have something to grind against Lindensteiners. If I was from Lindenstein and heard this, it's a pretty nice warning sign to avoid that table.

I always wanted to make a savory blue cheesecake with a bacon and walnut topping. I'm not a cheesecake fan... but THIS!

tomes so much of the crunch is completely optional pieces the gm plugs in to get a specific feeling into the game. I ran a Cortex game that used two categories (so you only ever rolled two dice- one category was the fate accelerated approaches, the other was interesting facts about your characters past) against a difficulty chosen by gm based on difficulty of the task. No doom pool, no effect dice, just ablative hit points, no spoiler complications, no SFX, no gear, that’s all optional. Gotta admit, that sounds pretty tight. Will have to explore more...

I played a Cortex game recently, and although I recognize that it's much more crunchy of a system than I desire, it's also one that I think would work relatively well once the players know how to navigate it. It definitely leans a bit more of a trad system as far as the amount of things to pull together, though, and that breaks a lot of the appeal for me personally. But if I had to game in a system that had that level of mechanics, I sort of feel like it might be the best one (?)

Also regarding random NPC names (another topic that came up), another cool resource for culture-specific names is this free PDF called the Story Games Names Project (I think by Jason Morningstar; same guy who did Fiasco; although I think lots of people contributed to this). The idea was if you wanted names specific to a real-world or fake-world culture or trope, you can pull from these and get some consistent-ish naming. studio101.ru/archive/studio101/other_materials/Story-Games_Names_Project.pdf

Per tappy's comment about how much of the advice around gaming is for GMs and not players... totally agree! They made this a "panel" at the last Gauntlet Con 2017, and it had some pretty solid advice. Some of it is specific to playing online games with RPGs, but still. It's listed as the " Being a Great Player" episode in the Gauntlet podcast feed, but the original recording is also on Youtube:

Just FYI, Fraser Simons is writing a simplified "World of Dungeons" style hack for his game The Veil, called Veil 2020. It's like his love letter to CP2020. He's playtesting it online too, and with a Google account it's free to play (if you can make your way through the waiting list... it happens occasionally): gauntlet-hangouts.firebaseapp.com/event-detail/-LDyhAHCxJeRVw9kZCrl (this is one of the games scheduled for July). FYI, this complete mini-game (Veil 2020) is in The Gauntlet's Codex zine issue 023: Chrome 2. It's only available to Patreon backers for a few months, but eventually will be on the Gauntlet DriveThruRPG area, a few months after the fact.
